Are you passionate about real estate, property assessment, and delivering exceptional service to your community? The City of West Allis is looking for a detail-oriented and dedicated Assessment Technician to join our Assessor’s Office. In this role, you’ll play a critical part in property data analysis, real estate valuation, and customer service, helping to ensure fair and accurate property assessments across our city.
 
As an Assessment Technician, you’ll play a key role in processing real estate documents, assisting staff on property inspections, and collecting market data. You’ll work closely with property owners, offering clear explanations on property valuations, and apply your expertise in real estate principles and appraisal methods, to ensure fair and accurate assessments. This role involves specialized office support tasks, including preparing, processing, and maintaining a variety of applications, permits, records, and reports, all in line with established policies.

  • Analyze and list all real property within the City of West Allis. Classify property by its use.
  • Appraise real property for assessment purposes using the sales comparison, cost, and income capitalization approaches.
  • Gather information about property by communicating with buyers and sellers, fielding sales, conducting rental surveys, examining leases, noting building occupancy and obtaining other economic information necessary to estimate market values of a real property.
  • Receive, process, and distribute sales data; verify property descriptions, legal description, and ownership chain of title; classify real property according to use; publish sale reports to websites; prepare, maintain and process parcels that change property classification.
  • receive, process, and distribute all permits; verify property descriptions, process building permits; calculate building cost data; measure and list land and improvements.
  • Inspect property (residences and buildings), new construction and major improvements to existing structure to establish value. Prepare documentation of completed inspections. Take photographs of properties.  Utilize sketching software to create accurate drawings of buildings and other structures.
  • Provide prompt, courteous and customer focused service, information and assistance to departmental employees, the public, other city departments and other agencies; handle inquiries from property owners in person, over the phone and by e-mail. Explain assessed values to property owners, leasing agents, managers and legal representatives.

  • High School Diploma/GED Required
  • An associate’s degree in administrative professional studies or a related field is preferred.
  • Two Years of Previous experience in assessment profession, appraisal profession, urban planning, real estate.  
  • Coursework in fields such as real estate, appraisal, economics, geography, urban planning, accounting, or business is preferred.
  • If not currently certified, you must obtain the State of Wisconsin Assessment Technician Certification within six months of hire.
  • Preferred Licenses: Residential Appraiser, Certified Residential Appraiser.

Candidates will be required to complete a practical assessment related to the role.

Salary : $27 - $37
