What are the responsibilities and job description for the Environmentalist position at City of West Allis?
A Southwest Suburban Health Department (SWSHD) Environmentalist is a public facing professional responsible for the health and safety of residents and visitors to the jurisdictions we support (West Allis, Greenfield, West Milwaukee, Greendale). Environmentalists not only enforce health and safety regulation, but they also identify risk factors between people and in specific spaces. The Environmentalist is fully engaged in the health department’s retail and restaurant inspection program, nuisance complaints, lead risk assessing, weights and measures, as well as other environmental health programs. Good judgment and decision-making skills are required.
The SWSHD Part Time Environmentalist recommends and assists in developing and maintaining environmental health programs. This person provides input on the operations of the program, assists other full-time staff with inspections as needed, writes inspection reports, compiles data regarding programs, and submits required assessments/documentation that is relevant to the work performed.
Retail (Restaurant) Food Inspection, licensing, sampling, and complaints
Pool/Whirlpool: Testing, Inspection, licensing, and complaints
Certified Lead Risk Assessor/Lead Poisoning Prevention: Environmental lead testing
Food/Waterborne Outbreak Investigations
Humane Animal/Rabies Quarantine and Control/Dangerous Dog Investigations
Environmental Health Administrative Duties (program standards, state programs: self-evaluations/self-assessments, standardization, grants, Healthspace billing/renewals/licensing, environmental health website management, etc)
Vending Licensing and Inspection
Healthy Homes (mold, radon, asbestos, air quality, indoor pests) Inspections/Complaints/Investigations

If not already REHS/RS credentialed, eligible for certification through the NationalEnvironmental Health Association (NEHA)within 1 year of hire.
Bachelor of Science Degree or Master’s Degree in Environmental Health or related field, or currently demonstrating progress toward degree completion.
