What are the responsibilities and job description for the Graduate Civil Engineer position at City of West Fargo?
Under supervision of both Assistant City Engineers, the Graduate Civil Engineer assists in the planning and construction of city infrastructure projects, review and regulation of private improvements, and the administration of engineering permits and programs. Assists in the completion of public improvement projects through a combination of design and construction field work. Jobs in this classification frequently involve moderately complex processes.
- Performs construction observation duties on assigned projects.
- Reviews, analyzes, and manages work performed by professional consultants for public infrastructure projects in compliance with city standards and other local, state or federal laws and regulations.
- Perform engineering computations and evaluate technical data related to public and/or private infrastructure projects.
- Monitors progress of construction projects and attends regular meetings with consultants, contractors, government agencies, and business owners involved in the project, and works to resolve conflicts and issues.
- Conducts on-site inspection to monitor progress of projects per the contract documents and plans and administers contract requirements using supervisors’ guidance.
- Ensure projects remain within set budget and recommends budget revisions to the City Engineer.
- Conducts plan review for public infrastructure projects, as well as private projects requiring city permits, as assigned by supervisor.
- Assists in the preparation or modification of reports, funding applications, plans and specifications, construction schedules and design of projects.
- Assists in administrating the City’s MS4 stormwater management requirements.
- Identifies project funding sources including completion of state or federal grant applications.
- Works safely, follows safe work practices, and identifies and reports unsafe work conditions.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, closely related field, OR
- Graduation in closely related field in near future
- Engineer in Training (EIT) Certification within one year of employment
- 6 months of previous industry experience either by position or internship.
- Ability to work within both office and field settings
- Ability to create and maintain effective working relationships with peers, superiors, other City departments, subordinates, key vendors, contractors, external government agencies and organizations
- Strong communication skills, both orally and in writing
- Valid driver’s license.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Previous civil engineering inspection experience.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS
- Must be able to work in a deadline-driven environment.
- May spend prolonged periods working at a desk and on a computer.
- Must be able to travel to various job sites.
- Must be able to traverse job sites, construction areas, and relative terrain.
- Must perform a full range of motion with lifting and/or carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds.
