Overview
The Deputy Fire Chief is a pivotal leadership role, second in command responsible for overseeing all operations of the fire department, ensuring the safety and well-being of the community. The Deputy Fire Chief answers to the Chief of the Department and acts as Chief in the absence of the Fire Chief. This position requires a highly skilled individual with extensive knowledge of firefighting techniques, emergency response protocols, and personnel management. The Deputy Fire Chief will lead a team of firefighters, coordinate emergency responses, and implement training programs to maintain high standards of safety and efficiency.
Annual stipend for EMT and Fire Marshal certification, if applicable.
Responsibilities
- Direct and manage all activities of the fire department including fire suppression, rescue operations, and emergency medical services.
- Develop and implement policies, procedures, and training programs to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Supervise and evaluate personnel performance; provide guidance and support for professional development.
- Coordinate with other emergency services and community organizations to enhance public safety initiatives.
- Oversee the maintenance of fire apparatus, equipment, and facilities to ensure operational readiness.
- Respond to emergencies as needed, providing leadership during critical incidents.
- Prepare reports on departmental activities, budgets, and resource allocation for review by city officials or governing bodies.
Requirements
- Proven experience in firefighting operations with a strong understanding of fire prevention techniques. The successful candidate will have had a minimum of 15 years firefighting experience with a minimum of 10 years of supervisory experience at the rank of captain or higher in a municipal career fire department, or combination fire department, of a similar size or greater than that of the City of West Haven FD, Allingtown.
- Certification: Fire Service Instructor Level I, Fire Officer Level III, as per NFPA Fire Officer standards, (Or the ability to successfully obtain FO III within one year of employment.
- State of CT EMT certification; or the ability to obtain reciprocity in a year
- State of CT certification as a Fire Marshal or Inspector Preferred.
- ICS 100, 200, (300 and 400 Preferred).
- Mechanical knowledge related to fire apparatus and equipment maintenance.
- CT. Q restriction or CDL driving license preferred for operation of fire vehicles.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to make quick decisions under pressure.
- Excellent communication skills for effective interaction with team members and the community.
- Knowledge of vital signs assessment to assist in emergency medical situations is advantageous.
