SUMMARY
Under direction of the Community Preservation Manager, performs a variety of duties associated with the issuing, renewing and processing of business licenses, rental licenses and related permits. Investigate reports of code violations and to enforce the business license ordinances. Responsible for collection of appropriate fees.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
No direct supervision. Individual may act as a lead with respect to the assigned staff as needed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Review applications for business licenses, rental licenses and permits; ensure proper inspections and compliance to specific ordinances for each application; compute fees; process and issue licenses. (Upon proper inspection and review, may approve applications for various home occupations.)
- Coordinates activities and shares information with other agencies such as, County Health Department, Consumer Protection, State Liquor Commission, South Valley Water Reclamation, Department of Agriculture, Department of Commerce, Tax Commission, Chamber of Commerce, and other organizations and agencies.
- Maintain accurate records of all business license transactions, rental dwelling licenses, good landlord program and documents.
- Maintain appropriate performance indicators, such as, number of licenses processed; track by department the turnaround time from submission of an application to license issuance.
- Interpret and explain business license ordinances to the public; assist in completing documents required for licensing.
- Responsible for the ongoing monitoring and revision of the City of West Jordan business license and rental dwelling ordinances; recommends revisions to exiting ordinances and draft proposed ordinances changes, as well as other policy and procedure related to business licensing and rental dwellings.
- Identify unlicensed businesses in the City by reviewing information from other agencies and sources and inspections of business areas.
- Notify business owners of unlicensed businesses of license requirements; collect fees and penalties to bring businesses into compliance.
- Process reports, forms, payments, certificates, applications, and other materials; fill in data on standard office forms; maintain records, files, indexes, registers, and books according to established methods and procedures; compile and tabulate data for records and reports.
- Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: High school diploma or GED. Associate degree in business administration, accounting, or a related field preferred.
Experience: Five years related experience working in a financial or office setting, with a minimum of two years involving customer service interaction with the public and responsibility for problem resolution or handling customer accounts. Business Licensing experience preferred. Spanish speaking preferred.
Certifications/Licenses:
- Valid Utah Driver's License

- Respond to requests and inquiries for information regarding business licensing and rental dwelling policies and procedures.

- Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
