Driver/Collector
Position Level: Non-exempt
Reports to: Sanitation Foreman
Position Summary
The Driver/Collector is responsible for driving and collecting recycling, garbage, bulk items, and yard waste from curbsides and/or alleys throughout the city. This role is critical in maintaining the cleanliness of the city and educating homeowners on proper disposal. Incumbent may also be required to perform the duties of other Street Department employees as directed by the Street Commissioner.
Essential Job Functions (include but are not limited to)
- Collects trash, brush, recyclables, and bulk items on scheduled route.
- Drives or rides on the side/back of vehicle during route collection.
- Safely operates, maintains, services, and cleans City vehicles and equipment.
- Conducts pre-workday inspection of vehicles and equipment.
- Completes daily inspection reports and fuels vehicles at the end of the work shift.
- Cleans and washes truck and equipment and helps with routine vehicle maintenance.
- Subject to 24-hour on call status for emergencies.
- Ensures all work meets or exceeds the organization’s expectations.
- Demonstrates professionalism when representing the organization in all communications with internal and external customers and vendors.
- Sustains housekeeping standards in accordance with safety and appearance guidelines.
- Completes and demonstrates a full understanding of ongoing training concepts and applications.
- Emulates the organization’s values in daily interactions with internal and external customers.
- Meets organization standards on quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis and performs all work-related tasks in a manner that complies with all policies and procedures.
- Adheres to the organizations' policies, procedures, and directives regarding standards of workplace behavior in completing job duties and assignments while maintaining regular and timely attendance.

Education/Skills/Experience
- Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience with operating a variety of trucks, equipment, and power tools.
- Capability to position vehicle on route so that workers are exposed to the least hazard without affecting traffic flow.
- Knowledge of dangerous and hazardous waste and proper disposal procedures.
- Ability to deal with customer complaints and or concerns in a courteous manner.
- Good attention to detail, organizational skills, and adherence to deadlines.
- Strong interpersonal and customer contact skills.
- Good written and/or verbal communication skills.
- Good problem-solving and strong decision-making skills.
- Ability to effectively communicate with others.

Work Schedule
This position is based on a standard workweek, Monday - Friday. Location hours are 7:00AM – 3:30PM. Occasionally this position is required to attend meetings, conferences, and work sessions outside of normal business hours. These instances may include client meetings, public board meetings, or team collaborations that fall outside the typical schedule. Flexibility in these situations is necessary as it contributes to our commitment to our customer’s satisfaction and project success. Regular, predictable attendance is required.
Working Environment
- Work is performed primarily outdoors in a variety of weather conditions (e.g., extreme heat or cold, rain, and snow).
- Work is performed in and around moving traffic and motorized equipment.
- Will be exposed to potentially hazardous materials and chemicals.
- Work is performed at a consistent pace.
- Ability to work in a team environment and communicate in a professional manner.
- Required to go to customer site where the environmental conditions will vary.

Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to:
- Possess the ability to push, pull, lift, and carry up to 75 lbs.
- Climb in and out of the vehicle multiple times each day.
- Stand or sit for extended periods of time.
- Reach, stoop, and kneel to work with vehicles and equipment.
- Communicate both in person, electronically, and by telephone as needed
- Possess good hearing and vision to recognize hazards of the surrounding areas.
Training to be completed
- Comprehensive understanding of the vision, goals, and objectives of the organization.
- All relevant Business System software.
- Successfully complete continuing education required to maintain knowledge of systems and programs.
- All applicable compliance training.

Certificates/Licenses
- Must be able to pass all applicable background checks.
- Valid Class B CDL with Air Brake Endorsement required with a safe driving record. Subject to random drug testing in compliance with the Department of Labor.
