Job Purpose
The Maintenance Technician II is responsible for carrying out a variety of labor intensive tasks to maintain the property and facilities managed for public safety and cleanliness by the Parks and Recreation Department.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintains woodlands, wetlands, and natural prairie areas under the direction of the Parks Director.
- Maintains parks and grounds by mowing, pruning of trees and shrubs, planting of new material, string-trimming, weeding, and mulching.
- Under supervision of a licensed Herbicide/Pesticide Applicator, assists with turf development, maintenance of landscape areas, and conservation of natural ecosystems with the use of pesticides and fertilizers via IPM programs.
- Maintains general cleanliness and upkeep of assigned City vehicle.
- Responsible for personal hand tool inventory.
- Assists with the clearing of snow from parking lots, sidewalks, paved trails, and other areas throughout the City.
- Under the direction of the Parks Director, assists with organizing and carrying out special projects and events throughout the City.
- Assists with parks, grounds, and facility operation, upkeep, and maintenance (e.g., general building repair and maintenance, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems) to include park shelters, athletic facilities, sidewalks, public use trails, waterlines, drinking fountains, drain lines, municipal pool, skating rink, and other structures and facilities.
- Recognizes the role of a park employee when meeting/greeting the public to communicate and respond to issues relating to the usage of City parks and programs.
- Maintains appearance and attitude acceptable to supervisors.
- Completes all other duties, as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must be physically capable of safely operating vehicles and maintenance equipment.
- Possess a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- Some knowledge in repair and operation of gas and diesel engine maintenance for both large and small equipment is preferred.
- General knowledge in the use of hand and power tools, as well as mowers, chainsaws, string trimmers, and snow blowers.
- Ability to communicate effectively with the public and coworkers in a positive manner, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to use good judgment and make decisions related to public safety.
Work Schedule
Monday through Friday, eight (8) hours per day. Successful completion of assigned duties and responsibilities may require work on evenings, weekends, and holidays, or responding to maintenance emergencies at any time of the day or night.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in a variety of settings. Varying combinations of field work in all weather conditions are the standard for positions in this classification. Some exposure to dust and noise. Employee will be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, toxic chemicals, and plumbing/electrical connections.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move items over seventy-five (75) pounds.
