What are the responsibilities and job description for the Fleet Service Technician II position at City of West Palm Beach?

Under limited supervision, performs a wide variety of mechanical work on light, medium and heavy duty vehicles and equipment; and performs related duties as assigned.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (which are not in any hierarchical order)

1. Performs routine diagnosis, general maintenance, and general mechanical repair work on city vehicles, mechanical equipment, and other machinery.

2. Performs general mechanical repair, maintenance, and preventive maintenance work, which may include dismantling, overhauling, repairing and reassembling engines, rebuilding/replacing transmissions, or rebuilding drive trains, carburetors, differentials, pumps and gear boxes.

3. Inspects, tests and repairs engine components and systems, such as ignition systems, computerized engine controls, electronic fuel injection systems, steering systems, electrical systems, suspension systems, hydraulic systems, brake systems, drive train systems, engine cooling systems, fuel systems, charging systems, starting systems, exhaust systems, emission systems, inflatable restraint systems, heating/air conditioning systems, power windows, lighting systems, or horns.

4. Performs routine and preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment, which may include pumping fuel into vehicles, checking/replacing fluid levels, draining/replacing oil, changing/replacing filters, lubricating mechanical parts, rotating tires, replacing tires/belts/hoses, checking batteries, greasing equipment, flushing radiators, and performing tune-ups/alignments.

5. Performs welding work on vehicles/equipment, which may include welding metal components, constructing or fabricating parts, or adapting existing parts when appropriate parts are unavailable.

6. Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with repairing, maintaining and testing equipment and vehicles, which may include a motor vehicle, vehicle lift, scanning tools, diagnostic analyzer, tire changer, tire balancer, battery charger, hydraulic jack, air compressor, pressure washer, generator, air conditioner recycling/recharging station, welder, torch, soldering iron, brake lathe, drill press, hydraulic press, grinder, gauges, meters, mechanic tools, and diagnostic instruments.

7. Tests vehicles, machinery, equipment, and parts for proper operations.

8. Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep tools/equipment in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking/replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning vehicles and equipment, and cleaning shop/work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.

9. Ensures availability of parts, tools, or supplies needed to operate/maintain vehicles/equipment; initiates orders for additional or replacement items; reviews incoming orders to ensure accuracy and completeness.

10. Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals, reporting accidents and incidents.

11. Maintains logs, service records, warranty records, and other documentation.

12. Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, work orders, training reports, or other documents.d to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

13. Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, work orders, work request forms, preventive maintenance checklists, invoices, safety newsletters, publications, technical manuals, electrical diagrams, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.

14. Operates a computer to retrieve, review, enter, or modify data; utilizes database, diagnostic or other software programs.

15. Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information and assistance; takes and relays messages; responds to requests for service or assistance.

16. Communicates with supervisor, co-workers, employees, other departments, customers, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

17. Performs other related duties as assigned.

$24.35 -Pay Grade 51

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED (education will be verified using the “Education Requirements” listed below) and three (3) years of experience in automotive, vehicle and equipment repair, or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

A current and valid State of Florida Class B Commercial driver’s license is required or ability to obtain within six (6) months from date of employment. For application purposes, a valid driver’s license from any state or a State of Florida Class E driver’s license may be utilized.

Special Driving Requirements

Have not lost any driving privileges by reason of revocation, suspension or denial of license, or have been convicted and/or had an adjudication withheld of three or more moving violations.

Have not had one DUI (Driving Under the Influence) in any preceding twenty-four (24) month period. License suspension of two weeks or less or suspensions based only on non-moving violations that have been cleared will not automatically result in revocation of driving privileges.

Have not had more than one DUI (conviction or adjudication withheld) in Florida or any other state within the past ten (10) years.

Education Requirements: To be considered valid (or verified) for position qualification purposes, and consistent with City Hiring Policy 4-5, a High School, GED or equivalent diploma, and all higher education degrees or certifications must have been issued by:

a) a public education institution in the State of Florida or any State or Territory of the United States; or

b) an institution accredited by an accrediting organization that is recognized by the Florida Department of Education or the U.S. Department of Education; or

c) an institution that is accredited by an organization that is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

d) an institution whose degree or certification is accepted by institutions identified in either a), b), or c), above, for the purpose of admission to institutions identified in either a), b), or c) above.

International degrees will be evaluated to determine if they satisfy qualification requirements.

The selection process for this position may consist of any, all or a combination of the following tests: evaluation of training and experience, written examination, structured oral interview or other assessment method.

State of Emergency:

When normal operations of City departments are suspended or interrupted due to a declaration by the Mayor that a state of emergency exists, all employees will be deemed critical by the City. For the preparation and/or continuation of emergency operations or for special work detail, employees deemed necessary shall be required to work. Employees deemed critical by the City but not needed for the initial preparation and/or continuation of emergency operations or for special work detail may be directed not to report to work, and given paid administrative leave or they may be reassigned to another location that best meet the needs of the City.
