DEFINITION: The Maintenance Worker/Senior performs a variety of tasks to install, maintain, repair, or improve all City infrastructure, which includes, but is not limited to, the sewer collection and water distribution systems, storm drainage facilities, streets and sidewalks, curbs and gutters.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED: The Maintenance Worker/Senior receives general direction from his/her supervisor. No direct supervision of staff is exercised.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS: Maintenance Worker is the entry level class in this series and is considered to be in a training status. Senior Maintenance Worker is considered to be the journey level in this series and works independently under general direction.
Advancement to the Senior Maintenance Worker level shall occur after satisfactorily performing the duties of Maintenance Worker for two (2) years. Satisfactory performance means an overall satisfactory or higher rating on the performance evaluation during the last evaluation period. An employee may be advanced to the Senior Maintenance Worker level in less than two (2) years if the employee's performance is noted as exceptional by the supervisor and the employee is recommended for early advancement by the Department Head.
Road Maintenance
This position is an entry-level position supporting all road and storm activities. Performs construction and maintenance work in one or more specialized programs in our public works department; work includes reconstruction/rehabilitation, surface maintenance, repair and or maintenance of potholes, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, storm drainage maintenance and repair, right-of-way maintenance, tree trimming or removal, street sweeping and customer service. Performs general road maintenance labor and operates light and heavy-duty equipment. Performs general traffic control, performs preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment. Cuts, removes brush, mows grass, and weed eats.
Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate possession of a commercial driver’s license (CDL) with a tanker endorsement. Also, Qualified Applicator Certificate from the Department of Pesticide Regulation, State of California, in order to apply herbicides and pesticides to aquatic and right-of-way areas.
Sewer Wastewater Collection Division
This position is an entry-level position supporting all Wastewater activities and performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled heavy manual work, alone or as a member of a crew, in the construction, maintenance and repair and related service activities for wastewater collection systems and sewer laterals. Performs construction and maintenance work in one or more specialized programs in our public works department; Locates, installs, maintains, repairs, and inspects sewer mains, laterals, manholes, and clean-outs. Performs hydro-cleaning, mechanical rodding, and system flushing of pipelines. Performs CCTV inspection of mainlines and laterals. Responds to emergency calls, customer requests, mainline backups, and overflows. Conduct traffic control / flagging in the city’s rights-of-way and USA marking.
Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate possession of a commercial driver’s license (CDL) with a tanker endorsement. Also, Possession of Grade 1 CWEA Collection System Maintenance Certification
Water Distribution
This position is an entry-level position supporting all Water Distribution activities and performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled heavy manual work, alone or as a member of a crew, in the construction, maintenance and repair and related service activities for water distribution systems and transmission lines. Performs construction and maintenance work in one or more specialized programs in our public works department; Locates, installs, maintains, repairs, and inspects water mains, water meter installations, hydrants, valves, moving and upgrading service lines. Responds to emergency calls, customer requests. Conduct traffic control / flagging in the city’s rights-of-way and USA marking.
Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate possession of a commercial driver’s license (CDL) with a tanker endorsement. Also, Possession of Grade 1 water distribution operator certificate issued by the California Water Resources Control Board.

Both levels must maintain the required commercial driver's license pursuant to the Department of Transportation regulations.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS: Ability to wear and use SCBA units as regulated by Cal/OSHA. Classification is subject to the drug and alcohol testing policy pursuant to the U.S. Department of Transportation regulation implementing the Federal Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991. May be required to participate in an on-call rotation.
