What are the responsibilities and job description for the Civil Engineering Intern position at City of West St. Paul?
Internship Duration: May – Aug/Sept
The Engineering Intern is responsible for performing a variety of tasks to support the 2025 construction season in West St. Paul. This position reports directly to the Engineering Project Manager. This is a seasonal/temporary position, lasting approximately 3 months. The start date will be in May, and the end date will be in August or September. The candidate must have the ability to work a flexible schedule, with the possibility of working some weekends. Every construction season varies, but work is typically Monday-Friday (7am-5pm). Overtime is paid at a 1.5X multiplier, after 40 hours in a pay period

- Assist with inspections on the Bernard Street Reconstruction Project, 2025 Full Depth Reclamation Project, utility installs, and other miscellaneous work around West St. Paul.
- Take daily written notes, take pictures of work performed, measure and track quantities, assist in data collection, perform erosion control inspections.
- Work around large excavations, concrete pours, and asphalt paving.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.).
- Valid driver's license.
- Enrollment in a college and working towards civil engineering, construction management, or related field. One year of coursework completed is required.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
- Previous transportation construction site experience.
- Previous transportation engineering experience.
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
- Ability to complete mathematical calculations.
- Must be reliable with consistent performance and attendance.
- Working knowledge of word processing, excel spreadsheets and GIS.
