Class Summary
This position performs journey level maintenance, repair, and/or operational activities in solid waste and recycling collection. Typical duties may include: coordinating the work of lower level staff; troubleshooting problems; providing customer service; operating and maintaining complex vehicles and/or equipment; performing vehicle and/or equipment repairs; and, troubleshooting complex maintenance and operational problems. Depending on assignment, may serve as a lead to lower level staff.
TYPICAL CLASS ESSENTIAL DUTIES: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)1.Performs journey-level maintenance and repair; work may involve diagnosing and troubleshooting complex maintenance and operational-related problems related to vehicles, equipment, building systems, water distribution and collection systems, and/or streets, including sidewalks and curbs2.Inspects, operates, and maintains complex vehicles, tools, and equipment, including hand and power tools, HVAC and other electrical controls, gauges, volt meters, radiators, safety devices, computer controls, converters, compressors, pumps, jet trucks, and/or bull dozers3.May coordinate the work of lower level staff and temporary workers, to include prioritizing and assigning work, monitoring work quality, processing payroll data, and/or providing training; monitors inventory to ensure adequate supply of materials and equipment; and monitors compliance with applicable policies and procedures4.Provides customer service and coordinates with the public, vendors, and other internal/external departments or agencies to provide assistance and information regarding schedules and ongoing operations, respond to work orders and customer/departmental requests, and facilitate complex maintenance activities and other departmental operations5.Prepares, maintains, updates, and/or submits reports, logs, service and other records, and other documentation; and maintains and/or updates applicable databases, records management software and other online systems and software, to ensure accurate and timely documentation, and compliance with applicable policies and procedures6.Performs other duties of a similar nature or level
Functional Specific Responsibilities
Positions assigned to Solid Waste may be responsible for:
High School Diploma or GED and 3 years of increasingly responsible experience in solid waste or recycling collection; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
Licensing Requirements
Depending on assignment, may require:
Positions in this class typically require: climbing, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Incumbents may be exposed to hazardous physical conditions, such as, mechanical parts, electrical currents, and vibrations; atmospheric conditions, such as fumes, odors, gases, and poor ventilation; extreme temperatures; inadequate lighting; work space-related movement restrictions; and intense noise.
