Nature of Work

Under the supervision of the CAU Supervisor, this position is responsible for researching, compiling, and analyzing information for the purpose of preparing crime analysis reports, maintain department statistics, and create reports used by the Police department to deter crime. In addition, this position identifies, analyzes, and conducts research on social media various open source sites to aid in the identification or apprehension of known criminals. This position requires excellent communication skills in order to communicate accurate information.

The Crime Analyst is a full time position that is part of the Division of Police, classified civil service, non-exempt (overtime eligible) and exempt from a union.

Essential Functions

Reviews the department's calls, reports, and other information to identify crime trends. Prepares reports for patrol, investigators, and others in order to focus on crime prevention efforts.

Prepares special crime analysis reports, bulletins, or advisories at the request of the police command staff.

Establishes and maintains files of reports of crime data and previous crime statistics.

Provide accurate, thorough, timely, and usable intelligence analysis.

Prepares maps and charts of the City for inclusion in crime pattern advisory reports for public presentation as needed.

Consults with surrounding law enforcement jurisdictions to exchange information and gather new information about crime trends.

Monitors Real Time Crime Center Cameras through FUSUS program.

May attend professional development training to remain current in the best practices of crime analysis.

Proficient in the use of computer software, social media, open source sites, and law enforcement sites to obtain information for statistical use and report creation.

Must be detail oriented and have the ability to focus on research topics for extended periods of time.

Completes and presents intelligence packets on identified suspects.

Conducts social media and open source research

Posts content to department's social media sites and monitors sites for information and follow up.

Produce and maintain accurate statistics related to department productivity, crime, and other areas as needed.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

High School diploma or GED and 3 years of experience working with statistics, performing research online, and performing online investigatory work.

Must be at least 18 years of age

Must have a valid State of Ohio motor vehicles license.

Must be able to pass an extensive police background investigation.

Preferred Education and / or Experience :

Bachelor's degree in statistics, criminal justice, or computer science is preferred but not required.

Certification as a Certified Law Enforcement Analyst (CLEA) through International Association of Crime Analysts (IACA), Criminal Intelligence Certified Analyst (CICA) through the International Association of Law Enforcement Intelligence Analysts (IALEIA), or similar.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES :

Knowledge of research and analytical procedures and principles, basic statistics, and basic criminal law.

Moderate knowledge of MS Office Applications and database relationships with the ability to link to various data sources for the purpose of statistics and reporting.

Ability to write and speak clearly

Ability to organize data obtained from various sources into a comprehensible document

Ability to operate a computer for the purpose of retrieving, analyzing, and compiling data into reports and advisories

Skill in open source investigations

Skill in computer research, determining patterns of behaviors or illegal activities from random sources of information.

Mental and Physical Abilities : Must be able to read, write, sit for prolonged periods of time, and give out information to supervisors concisely on demand.

Ability to efficiently produce a high quality work product

Ability to meet deadlines regularly

Ability to work with little or no supervision, self-starter that anticipates the needs of the department.

Must obtain certification as Crime and Intelligence Analyst within 12 months of completion of the probationary period.

Working Conditions :

Ability to work a flexible schedule with some overtime as needed.
