Nature of Work
JOB SUMMARY AND DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK:
Under the direction of the chief of police, the part-time custodian is responsible for the care, cleaning and maintenance of the police department building and grounds in order to maintain a clean, safe and fully functioning environment in which employees may work and the community may visit.

Maintains the care and cleanliness of facilities including: cleans offices, furniture and equipment; empties interior and exterior trash cans; washes windows; polishes mirrors & glass; vacuums & shampoos carpet; replenishes soap, paper towels & toilet paper; cleans and sanitize breakrooms and restrooms using established practices and procedure; and strips, cleans, and buffs hard surface floors.

Performs routine building maintenance including: minor repairs to furniture, equipment, plumbing, electrical and mechanical equipment; lighting, heat and air conditioning inspection; and painting, patching as needed.

Performs grounds maintenance work including: maintaining all sidewalks free of debris, ice and snow; and routine care and maintenance of exterior lots and building.

Ensures adequate inventory of required cleaning supplies and equipment for the police building.

Regularly communicates with City’s head custodian on matters related to needed repair or service in the police building.
IMPORTANT JOB FUNCTIONS:
Performs miscellaneous related duties (e.g. removes litter from grounds; replaces light bulbs; secures doors &/or windows; moves furniture, equipment, supplies and tools on an incidental basis).
Utilizes computer, phone, and email for the purpose of communicating with Head Custodian or police personnel for matters related to the police building or safety concerns.
Inspects areas for cleanliness, health & safety hazards, odors & pest control to ensure compliance with standards and safety procedures.
Acts as liaison to Police Administration for building, lots and land needs which fall under the responsibility of the Chief of Police.
Acts as Safety Compliance Officer; reports major repairs & hazardous conditions to appropriate personnel.
Works around chemicals and compounds used in cleaning and custodial work.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Chief of Police.
Working Conditions:
Must be able to work safely in an environment containing caustic chemicals, cleaning materials, waste, dust and noise. May occasionally be required to work under inclement weather.

Minimum Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
- Workplace experience in a maintenance or custodial position.
- Ability to work flexible hours.
- Ability to perform essential functions of the job.
Preferred Qualifications:
- High School diploma or GED.
- Experience or education in mechanics, machinery, or related field (e.g. electrical wiring, HVAC systems, plumbing, and/or carpentry work).
Licenses and Certifications:
Valid State Driver's License.
Other:
Ability to provide a law enforcement background check clear of any wants/warrants or criminal history.
