BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
The purpose of this position is to provide care for animals in and out of the shelter. This is accomplished by maintaining, feeding, and giving water to the animals. Providing basic medical aid and cleaning animal cages and shelter grounds. In addition, the officer will patrol the city and investigate animal cruelty, neglect charges, and promote compliance with laws and ordinances regulating animal treatment. This is accomplished by identifying violations, issuing warnings, and citations. The officer will complete animal rescue activities, impound animals, and help control the spread of rabies. Other duties include setting traps, picking up deceased animals, inspecting establishments that house or exhibit animals to ensure compliance with humane laws, educating pet owners, and writing reports of activities.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Knowledge of basic animal control training, euthanasia training, bite stick and OC spray usage, vaccination storage and handling, and animal handling.

2 L Verifies and/or grants permits for livestock by ensuring and/or verifying space limitations as set by ordinance, measuring square footage, and checking permits for renewal or expiration.
3 S Answers the phone and responds to calls or complaints.
4 H Maintains shelter by cleaning animal cages, sweeping, and mopping floors. Loading and unloading food, cat litter and other supplies.
5 H Provides care for the animals by feeding, watering, exercising, bathing, medicating the animals when necessary, and assisting in euthanasia of animals.
6 H Assist with intake and kennel assignments, may assist the public by providing information, and assisting in reclaiming lost animal.
7 H Enforces City and State animal regulations, rabies control and licensing requirements. Issues written warnings or citations to violators of the City Ordinance and State Laws as necessary, which may include filing suits, gathering evidence, preparing cases for court, working with City Attorney, and testifying in court.
8 V Patrols streets and identifies violations by observing areas of alleged violations and interviewing available witnesses to determine if laws are being violated, setting traps, capturing animals, checking for animals reported to be without food, shelter or water, verifying licenses and vaccinations, and impounding stray or dangerous animals.
9 V Picks up and disposes of deceased animals by patrolling streets, responding to veterinarian clinic calls, and storing and disposing of dead animals.

Vocational/ Educational Preparation Requires High school graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized courses/training equivalent to completion of one year of college
