What are the responsibilities and job description for the Engineering Aide II - Inspection position at City of Wichita?
This is routine civil engineering work of a sub-professional nature performed in the field or office. Employees perform inspection assignments related to enforcing adherence to specifications, lines, and elevations established by contractors; inspection related to enforcing adherence to materials quality and design specifications; and/or manual tasks in survey parties; simple tracing, drafting, and computing work not requiring previous specialized training or experience. Work requires application of basic engineering skill. The degree of supervision given depends upon the technical difficulty of each assignment, but employees are expected to perform routine tasks independently. Specific assignments are received from a supervisor and are accompanied by detailed directions when work is other than routine. These employees have no supervisory responsibilities.

- Inspects various types of construction projects that involve street paving, pavement maintenance, water & sewer utility construction, and other municipal infrastructure. Projects may involve new construction or rehabilitation of existing infrastructure.
- Documents progress on construction projects; measures, calculates, and reports daily quantities completed for pay estimates
- Submits reports using basic Microsoft Office programs (Excel, Word, Outlook)
- Review & interpret construction plan drawings, specifications, and shop drawings to ensure contractor work is in compliance with construction & contract documents
- Records field notes; prepares cross-section plans and profile drawings.
- Makes mathematical calculations and computations.
- Operates snow removal equipment during snow operations, as needed.
- Acts as a survey party worker: holds a sight rod or level rod, runs one end of chain, uses line staff to indicate a point or places staff where directed by party chief, carries equipment.
- Inspects, tests, and accounts for material delivered to the job.
- Performs inspection assignments to insure that proper amounts of aggregate and cement are used in construction projects and checks for proper grade.
- Assists in testing construction materials: collects samples, makes up test cylinders, bars and samples, assists in operating testing equipment.

- Knowledge of surveying or drafting instruments and methods.
- Ability to make routine engineering computations.
- Ability to quickly learn work-related mathematics and to make computations rapidly and accurately.
- Ability to quickly learn to use construction principles and practices, construction materials, tools and equipment.
- Ability to lean and reach as needed to read and interpret building plans and specifications from a print that may be as large as 36 by 48 inches with information printed as small as twenty characters per inch.
- Ability to traverse uneven terrain, climb steps or ladders, and tolerate airborne environmental nuisances associated with construction sites.
- Ability to sense approaching traffic while working in streets.
- Ability to periodically be confined to close quarters such as walking through 42 inch pipe or crawling into manholes for short periods of time.
- Ability to quickly learn work-related mathematics and to make computations rapidly and accurately.
- Ability to work outdoors when inclement weather conditions exist.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, representatives of other organizations, and the public.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license.
- This position will require working outdoors in inclement weather including but not limited to, rain, snow, ice, sleet, heat, and humidity plus snow and ice removal and/or emergency response operations that would include operating equipment and vehicles on overnight shifts, weekends and in low-light and low visibility conditions, or other adverse weather conditions.
- An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
- Successful completion of high school diploma or general education degree (GED).
- One year of work experience in manual labor, manufacturing, construction, field operations, or transportation.
- Ability to obtain American Concrete Institute (ACI) certification within six months of hire.
- A valid driver's license.
- Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.
- One and a half years of experience in construction, drafting, surveying, engineering technical support work, or maintaining water, sewer, or other utility pipeline is preferred
- A current American Concrete Institute (ACI) certification or provide evidence of previous attainment of certification.
