What are the responsibilities and job description for the Equipment Operator II (E) - 619 - Water Distribution position at City of Wichita?

This is skilled work operating specialized automotive equipment in the maintenance and repair of water distribution systems. Work usually includes operating excavation equipment, as well as servicing and making minor repairs to equipment operated. This person may act as crew leader over a small number of employees to accomplish specific tasks or assignments. A supervisor gives general directions in routine tasks and special instructions when changes are made in established procedures.

  • Operates tractors and trucks with special attached equipment such as power loaders, backhoes, winches, snow plows, and other attachments which are used for varied maintenance purposes.
  • Operates special equipment used in water system work, such as pumps, cables, boring machines and valve turners.
  • Operates equipment in performing water/sewer line installation and maintenance work, such as trenchers, backhoes, hydro-lifts, loaders, pavement breakers and tapping machines.
  • Operates equipment in performing maintenance work.
  • Performs mechanical maintenance and service work on equipment operated.
  • May act as a backup operator or assistant to an Equipment Operator III or a supervisor

  • Knowledge of the principles of automotive equipment operation
  • May require the ability to lead the work of a small number of helpers on maintenance operations
  • Knowledge of the tools, methods and materials used in construction and maintenance activities such as those used in operating and maintaining water distribution systems.
  • Ability to maneuver self into riding machines with two foot steep first step, and onto frame or fender as required in order to perform fluid/filter check daily and maintenance every 100 hours or as needed on mowers and plows.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 100 pounds with the assistance of another person.
  • Ability to maintain balance and physically tolerate riding heavy equipment over rough terrain for long periods of time.
  • Ability to work outdoors when inclement weather conditions exist.
  • Ability to tolerate exposure to airborne environmental nuisances associated with traffic and machine exhaust, open grounds, and construction.
  • Ability to tolerate equipment and machinery noise with the use of ear plugs.
  • Ability to continuously perform tasks that require one to push, pull, climb (ladders and in and out of vehicular equipment), bend, twist, reach, stand, and walk (up to half a mile at a time) for most of an eight-hour shift.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to complete training in trenching and shoring, and confined space work
  • Possession of and ability to maintain a valid Kansas Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL). If you are a Canadian or Mexican citizen, you will be required to have or obtain a CDL from your home country. 
  • This position will require working outdoors in inclement weather including but not limited to, rain, snow, ice, sleet, heat, and humidity plus snow and ice removal and/or emergency response operations that would include operating equipment and vehicles on overnight shifts, weekends and in low-light and low visibility conditions, or other adverse weather conditions.
  • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
Required Experience and Training

  • Two years of experience in the operation of automotive or specialized equipment used in construction or maintenance activities
  • Valid Kansas Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL). If you are a Canadian or Mexican citizen, you will be required to have or obtain a CDL from your home country. 
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.  
Preferred Experience and Training

  • Two years of experience in the operation of automotive or specialized equipment used in water distribution systems.
  • Completion of training in confined space entry, and trenching and shoring, preferred.
Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of the results of a criminal record check.

Starting pay for current City employees will be determined by City of Wichita policy or applicable bargaining unit agreement.
