What are the responsibilities and job description for the Municipal Court Bailiff (Part-Time) position at City of Williston?

Schedule:  This is an intermittent position scheduled two (2) days per week on Monday’s and Thursday’s.

  • Minimum hours worked per scheduled day is four (4) hours per day.
  • Maximum hours worked per scheduled day is up to eight (6.5) hours per day.

Summary:  This position is responsible for attending all court sessions and maintaining the custody and monitoring of inmates and assisting the court as directed.  Ensure security during court sessions.  This position is also responsible for transportation of inmates to and from the Williams County Correctional Center to Municipal Court.  

Supervision Received:  Finance Director, Municipal Court Judge.

Supervision Exercised: None 

FLSA Status:   Non-Exempt 

Essential Job Functions:  

  1. Greet defendants and the public upon entering the courtroom. 
  2. Facilitate the transfer of court documents between the Judge, City Attorney and Court Clerk. 
  3. Provide inmates with required paperwork that the Clerk has prepared.
  4. Monitor and create a pleasant and comfortable atmosphere while court is in session.
  5. Maintain confidentiality of court operations and records as required by law. 
  6. Work collaboratively with Municipal Court team, Judges, City Attorneys, Police Department and all agencies with a vested interest in the court.  
  7. Provide security to the courtroom. 
  8. Transport inmates from the Williams County Correctional Center to the courtroom and back to the Williams County Correctional Center.
  9. Supervise inmates in the courtroom.
  10. Be physically present in attendance at the worksite; paying attention to and addressing disruptions from the viewing gallery or inmate bench.
  11. Attend all court sessions.
  12. Perform all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures.  
  13. Performs other duties of a comparable level or type.

Minimum Qualifications and Certification or Licensing Requirements: Be at least 21 years old, United States citizenship and physical residence within the judicial district served, unless physical residence is waived by the presiding judge of the municipal court.  

Education:  High School Diploma or equivalent. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Courteous and cooperative.
  • Understands, reads, and relays instructions.
  • Manages and monitors a group of people.
  • Follows and requires others to follow set rules.
  • Keeps information confidential.
  • Interpersonal skills to deal effectively with all levels of the public.
  • Understanding of court procedures.  
  • Submit to a background check and preemployment drug and alcohol screening and pass other physical or written tests.  
  • Law enforcement experience preferred. 

 Physical Requirements:

  • The essential functions of the job typically require: sitting, standing, walking, talking, hearing, seeing, feeling, reaching, and fingering requirements or other reasonable methods that accommodate an individual in completing the essential functions of the job.
  • Physical requirements can typically be characterized as Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
  • Work occasionally involves personal danger and potential exposures to hazardous situations.
