Patrol Officer
The City of Wilmington, Ohio, is seeking to build a candidate pool for the position of full-time Patrol Officer within the Wilmington Police Department. The Patrol Officer enforces laws and ordinances, provides for public safety, regulates traffic, controls crowds, prevents crime, and arrests violators within an assigned area.
This position is subject to oversight and certification by the Civil Service Commission. Commission rules mandate that applicants must first pass a written examination with a minimum score of 70% to progress in the hiring process. Scores from written exams and interviews are weighted evenly and candidates with combined scores of 70% or higher will be certified as eligible by the Civil Service Commission and placed on the Eligibility List for one (1) year. This exam is currently administered online via the National Testing Network.
The Commission shall grant an additional military service credit of 20% upon submission for qualifying DD214. Upon certification of eligibility, candidates are ranked by combined score and an offer of employment will first be extended to the candidate with the highest score. Essential Job Functions
- Provides for public safety by maintaining order and security, responding to emergencies, protecting people and property, enforcing motor vehicle and criminal laws, and promoting good community relations.
- Responds to traffic and roadside emergencies to provide assistance; investigates traffic accidents and other accidents to determine causes and to determine if a crime has been committed.
- Records facts to prepare reports that document incidents and activities; prepares investigation or incident reports; performs follow-up on cases and updates reports.
- Patrols specific area on foot or motorized conveyance; responds promptly to calls for assistance; performs routine checks of business and commercial establishments; monitors, notes, reports, and investigates suspicious persons and situations, safety hazards, and unusual or illegal activity in patrol area; performs parking enforcement
- Gathers evidence, obtains witness statements, apprehends suspects, and makes arrests; testifies before court and grand jury.
- Cleans and performs preventive maintenance on police vehicle and equipment.
- Provides emergency response assistance to Wilmington Fire Department when required.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Ohio Peace Officer Certification*
- Must be at least 21 years of age at time of appointment
- Valid drivers license with satisfactory driving record
*Applicants may be considered without Ohio Peace Officer Certification but would be required to obtain the certification within a specified period.
The starting base salary will be consistent with the City's approved pay plan and collective bargaining agreement; this position's entry-level salary is $27.66 per hour and lateral transfers' pay is commensurate with experience. This positions has defined pay increases at the end of training and annually thereafter according to the collective bargaining agreement.
