What are the responsibilities and job description for the Emergency Vehicle Technician I position at City of Wilmington?

The purpose of this position is to service SUV’s, sedans, and light duty trucks within the Wilmington Fire Department while gaining experience and knowledge to work on diesel apparatus.
This is accomplished by :
Completing preventive maintenance and routine repairs.
Changing oil, filters, tires, and other fluids.
Diagnosing and repairing brakes, engine, transmission, drive-train components, lighting, electrical wiring, starters, alternators, etc.
- Performs preventative maintenance by checking all fluids, filters and other components; draining and changing fluids; changing filters; replacing tires with spares; replacing wheels; rotating tires; balancing and installing new tires; road testing vehicle; performing inspections; and inspecting emergency and safety equipment.
- Performs front and rear brake repairs, diagnose and makes necessary repairs to, cooling systems, electrical systems, emission systems, engines, transmission, drivelines, steering, and suspension.
- Performs general roadside service by driving to job site with service truck and performing roadside assistance.
- Strip vehicles for surplus, pick up parts
- Maintain shop appearance.
- Picking up parts from various vendors
- Work under direct supervision of an EVT II mechanic to gain skills and knowledge on fire apparatus maintenance.
- Six-months to one year of advanced study or training beyond high school or GED education, and three years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education or experience.
- Current Auto Service Excellence (ASE) Certification, or ability to obtain within one year of hire.
- Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), or ability to obtain within one year of hire.
- NC State Inspection License, or ability to obtain within 180 days of hire.
- NC State Emission License, or ability to obtain within 180 days of hire.
- Forklift License, or ability to obtain within one year of hire.
- EVT I certification within 3 years of hire.
- Position requires rotating on call availability.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Exerts up to 50-100 lbs. occasionally; 10-25 lbs. frequently; or up to 10-20 lbs. constantly.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
This position generally requires work in a mechanical garage setting. Outdoor work may be necessary for particular tasks.
