Job Summary / Scope

The hiring range for this position is $49,830.02 (minimum salary) to $68,623.51 (midpoint of range) dependent upon qualifications.

The purpose of this position is to perform mechanical and maintenance duties in support of two water treatment plants and all related facilities, including dams, reservoirs, elevated storage tanks, and pumping stations. Successful performance provides safe drinking water for city residents and visitors.

The work consists of related mechanical and maintenance duties. Changing weather conditions contributes to the complexity of the position.

Job Responsibilities

Major Duties

  • Troubleshoots and diagnoses problems; performs corrective maintenance on any electrical or mechanical equipment.
  • Performs regular preventative maintenance on all equipment at water plants and associated sites.
  • Unloads bulk chemicals used in water treatment.
  • Performs the work of Water Treatment Plant Operator when necessary.
  • Installs and demonstrates equipment to upgrade the facility.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Guidelines include federal, state and local regulations, city policies, standard operating procedures for the Water Treatment Division, and supervisory instructions. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

  • Minimum Qualifications

    Education / Experience Requirements

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship / internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated and a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsement within six months of hire.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain an appropriate state-certified license for water or wastewater treatment or distribution as appropriate.
  • Knowledge Requirements

  • Knowledge of city and department policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of electrical installation and repair.
  • Knowledge of the operation and repair of pumps, mixers, and chemical feed equipment.
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of the equipment used in water treatment, filtration, pumping, and storage.
  • Knowledge of the basic principles and practices of mechanical maintenance and repair.
  • Skill in the use of the standard tools used in the installation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Skill in the use of various types of lab equipment.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Work Environment / Physical Demands

  • The work is typically performed at water treatment plants and related facilities, while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. .
  • The work may be performed outdoors and occasionally in cold or inclement weather.
  • The work is performed in a very noisy place and the employee is exposed to much dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and irritating chemicals.
  • The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
  • The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and must be able to distinguish between shades of color.
