Summary

Under general supervision, the Wastewater Maintenance Operator performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled technical and maintenance work in the operation, maintenance and repair of wastewater treatment facilities and collection systems. This position is a tentative "At-Will" appointment and subject to a probationary period of six (6) months from the date of hire. Upon successful completion of a probationary period, a non-management employee shall be granted regular status in the classification in which the probationary period is served.

Employees are required to be in attendance and prepared to begin work at their assigned work location on the specified days and hours. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following :

  • Monitors the performance of all equipment, gauges, and charts in the treatment plant and lift stations.
  • Records statistical data concerning plant operations; charts lab results for trend analyses and test result; evaluates data and writes reports as required.
  • Operates, starts up, and shuts down pumps, valves, and associated process equipment.
  • Assists maintenance personnel with repairs and replaces equipment as necessary.
  • Collects wastewater samples and conducts analyses required in accordance with local, State, and Federal requirements.
  • Identifies potential process and equipment problems and relays to higher level staff to coordinate corrective actions.
  • Operates and maintains solids disposal facilities; removes dried sludge from drying beds.
  • Computes chemical dosage and adjusts chemical feed systems for proper operational control of treatment process.
  • Operates a hydro-jet and vactor truck in the collection system.
  • Performs necessary painting, yard work, janitorial, and housekeeping duties as assigned.
  • Performs related duties as assigned or required.

  • Applicable local, State, and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Principles, practices, materials, and equipment used in wastewater treatment and collection systems.
  • Work safety policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Lab procedures and equipment operations.
  • Sample collection and handling procedures.
  • Records maintenance and retention practices and policies.
  • Skill in :

  • Operating a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Reading and accurately interpreting manuals, blueprints, and electrical diagrams.
  • Understanding and following established rules, policies, and safety practices.
  • Following written and verbal instructions.
  • Preparing clear and concise reports.
  • Maintaining accurate records and logs.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Minimum Qualifications

    Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines

    High school diploma or GED equivalent AND one (1) year of experience in wastewater utilities operations; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

    LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

    Must possess a Grade I Wastewater Treatment or Collection certification or obtain license within six (6) months of employment.Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license. Must possess a valid Commercial Arizona driver's license or obtain license within six (6) months of employment.

    Physical Demands / Working Environment

    Work is performed at wastewater treatment facilities and requires exposure to potentially dangerous tools, equipment, and machinery, hazardous chemicals, infectious diseases, and outdoor weather conditions. May be required to work in confined spaces and lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
