What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lifeguard position at City of Winston-Salem?
Under general supervision, to enforce safety regulations; follow policy and procedures; to prevent injuries and loss of life at municipal swimming pool; and to do related work as apparent or assigned.

- Maintain surveillance of swimming and diving areas to prevent mishap
- Assist swimmers from the water when in difficulty
- Applies resuscitation and administers first aid treatment
- Enforces swimming pool regulations
- Assists in teaching swimming
- Collects fees
- Assists pool supervisors in operation and maintenance of pool and program.
Current certification in the American Red Cross Lifeguarding or YMCA Lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer and ability to perform Lifeguarding skills.
Knowledge and Abilities:
Knowledge of Lifeguarding techniques and procedures; knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions needed for safe swimming pool operation; ability to teach swimming lessons; ability to develop and maintain an effective working relationship with coworkers, supervisors, and the general public.
Physical Requirements
This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; frequent swimming, standing, walking, sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions; work has standard vision, close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, peripheral vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires observing general surroundings and activities; work requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions; work occasionally requires exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
