General Definition of Work
Performs skilled technical work conducting plumbing, mechanical inspections to enforce and ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Senior Plumbing/Mechanical Inspector.
Essential Functions
Inspects construction of residential and commercial buildings; enforces mechanical and plumbing codes and local ordinances related to construction of residential and commercial buildings.
Records and documents all inspections and requests for inspection; maintains records of inspections and daily work; coordinates inspections and daily tasks.
Investigates complaints regarding defective mechanical and plumbing installations to ensure compliance with code and industry standards, testifies in court if required.
Advises customers, contractors, and public of corrective actions needed to be in compliance with code and industry standards. Informs contractors of codes and changes to codes as needed.

Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED with coursework in HVAC or plumbing systems, or related field experience performing HVAC and plumbing installations or maintenance; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Associates/Technical degree preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Comprehensive knowledge of related industry, organization, and department polices, practices and procedures; thorough knowledge of related industry organization, and departmental legal guides, recommendations, best practices, ordinances, and laws; thorough knowledge of related industry equipment; thorough knowledge of safety equipment; thorough knowledge of standard office equipment; general knowledge of tablets and smart phones; general knowledge of standard office software and department specific software; general knowledge of safety reports; skill in using assigned equipment; ability to detect violations of plumbing, and mechanical installations; ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions or decimals; ability to maintain records; ability to perform duties in hazardous conditions; ability to manage time effectively; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
Physical Requirements: This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work requires standing, walking, sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling and lifting; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock, exposure to vibration and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

Certification Ladder: This position is eligible for participation in the Certification Ladder Program. Each certification in an eligible trade area (building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing) outside of the primary work responsibility shall result in a 3% increase in pay, so long as the program is in effect. Please note that this program is at the discretion of the Elected Body during the Annual Budget process. Starting salary can be adjusted bade on the number of additional certifications held.
