General Definition of Work
Performs difficult skilled trades work maintaining and repairing mechanical components of wastewater treatment systems, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Utilities Supervisor. Continuous oversight is exercised over all personnel within the team. Maintains a safe work environment and ensures all city policies are followed.

  • Supervises employees; schedules safety/training class for employees; keeps timesheets; performs performance reviews and evaluations; assigns work; trains other mechanics in the repair and maintenance of new and existing wastewater plant equipment.

  • Performs daily inspections of plant, noting any repairs that are needed; performs visual/hands on inspections of tanks.

  • Diagnoses and repairs complex equipment related to the wastewater treatment industry; creates new preventative maintenance work orders; monitors trends in repairs and failures to recommend new cost saving and less problematic procedures and plans.

  • Research and purchases parts or services required for the repair and upkeep of equipment; manages parts inventory and stock room.

  • Manages all City assets for responsible work sites; completes progress reports; manages computer-based asset management program.

  • Reads manuals, blueprints and standard operating procedures to set up and deploy maintenance intervals for all equipment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of related industry, organization and department policies, practices and procedures; Thorough knowledge of blueprints, factory manuals, and engineering specifications; thorough knowledge of telemetry, trending reports, and graphs of the trade; thorough knowledge of timesheets and employee appraisals; billing statements, and invoices; thorough knowledge on reading meters; thorough knowledge of the use and operation of equipment related to the trade; ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions and decimals; ability to compute rates, ratios and percentages; ability to compute measurement conversion in field; ability to compute flow, pressure, and other liquid mathematical principles; ability to develop and maintain an effective working relationship with associates, supervisors, and the general public.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED and considerable experience working with hydraulics, pump, and mechanical components, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: (Reasonable accommodations may substitute for any physical requirements listed): This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires walking, sitting, reaching with hands and arms and tasting or smelling and occasionally requires standing, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to fumes or airborne particles, frequently requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (non-weather) and exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme cold (non- weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock, exposure to vibration and wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

Special Requirements

  • Valid Commercial Drivers License.
  • Ability to obtain Forklift Operator's License within 6 months of hire.
  • OSHA Safety Training.
