Performs intermediate skilled trades work building, installing, and maintaining traffic signal systems and electronic equipment, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Assistant Traffic Signal Supervisor. Continuous oversight is exercised over Traffic Signal Technician.
  • Maintains traffic signals at various city intersections as assigned; upgrades existing systems as necessary.
  • Troubleshoots and programs controller for operation of traffic signals.
  • Repairs malfunctioning traffic signals.
  • Installs underground and overhead traffic signal wires; installs inductive detection loops.
  • Sets up road closures and detours for traffic signal repairs; direct vehicle traffic during special events.
  • Builds new signals according to specifications.
  • Answers trouble calls for field repairs; assigned to night standby duty for emergency repairs
  • Performs snow removal duties as needed.

Education and Experience:  High school diploma or GED and considerable experience working with traffic signal systems, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of related industry, organization, and department policies, practices, and procedures; thorough knowledge of related industry, organization, and departmental legal guides, recommendations, best practices, ordinances, and laws; comprehensive knowledge of traffic signal control systems; thorough knowledge of industry standard and department specific equipment; thorough knowledge of standard office and department specific software; general knowledge of electrical engineering; general knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and necessary safety precautions; ability to compute rates, ratios, and percentages; ability to read electrical diagrams; ability to work standby at night for emergency repairs; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

Physical Requirements: This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires using hands to finger, handle or feel and lifting, frequently requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions and occasionally requires sitting and climbing or balancing; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to the risk of electrical shock and occasionally requires exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to vibration; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

Possession of a valid North Carolina class B Commercial Driver's License.

Possession of certification as a Traffic Signal Technician Level II from the International Municipal

Signal Association or ability to obtain within 6 months.

Normal color vision.

Availability to work standby at night for emergency repairs.
