What are the responsibilities and job description for the Temporary Laborer (SOAR) position at City of Winston-Salem?
The purpose of the Successful Outcomes After Release (SOAR) program is to provide opportunities for employment to former convicted offenders. For the intentions of this employment program, a former offender is defined as someone who has at least one prior criminal conviction for which they may or may not have served time. This program is temporary for six months and part-time.
Daily schedule may vary.
Under immediate supervision, SOAR participants will perform routine labor jobs such as landscaping, mowing, maintaining public and historic buildings, picking up paper and debris on public property and streets, and assisting with housing code enforcement.
To be eligible to participate in this program, applicants MUST meet the following criteria:- Must be a resident of Winston-Salem.
- Must have at least one prior conviction.
- Pursuant to Chapter 143B-421.1 of the North Carolina General Statutes, all men 18 through 25 years old are REQUIRED to register for Selective Service.
- Must pass a City-sponsored drug test at the time of job offer.
- Must consent to a background check.
- Be able to work 32 hours a week (Monday –Friday)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: (Reasonable accommodations may substitute for physical requirements listed): Must be able to lift or move minimum of 25 lbs. and maneuver up to 1 mile; must be able to operate light and medium equipment; work with large and small objects. This position will work outdoors and may be exposed to changing weather, adverse smells and sights, loud sounds and repetitive operations.
