The Meter Repair Technician I will work closely with a team of technicians and supervisors within the City’s Water Department to ensure accurate and reliable meter readings.

Essential Job Functions:
Performs manual labor work related to water meters and water lines. Manual excavation and backfills shallow holes to remove and replace water meters, meter boxes and their covers. Utilizes hand tools to remove, install and modify utility connections, valves, and meters. Perform re-reads. Walks/drives assigned meter reading routes; accurately reads water consumption utilizing handheld computer data terminals, radio reads drive by terminal and/or by manual written method. Returns completed readings to supervisor. Inspects meters for defects, damages, and unauthorized use. Reports any malfunctions. Completes turn on and turn off functions for new and existing water customers and other service work as may be requested. Maintains electronic records via IOS platform for email, text message, and various applications to report completed work; consumption reports, time, material, and labor. Responds to trouble calls, emergency calls, and service requests received. Communicates with customers to advise of water running, work performed, utility meter operation, and any other information pertinent to the situation. Operates City vehicles to travel to various locations throughout the City to perform assigned duties. Must be available for work outside of regular work hours: (Monday – Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) and respond to emergency situations involving the construction, maintenance, and repair of water meters and must actively participate in an on-call rotation: (Monday - Friday 3:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.) for same day utility service requests. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Ability to comprehend and follow oral and written instructions; assist in training for other new hire Meter Repair Technician I positions when needed; and navigate IOS applications or willingness to be trained on IOS platform.
- Skill in operating trucks in traffic and confined areas.
Minimum Education & Experience:
- Graduation from an accredited high school, vocational school, or possession of a GED or equivalent.
Special Requirements:
- Must have a valid State of Florida driver’s license and a good driving record as determined by the City of Winter Haven.
- Absence of non-prescribed controlled substances in the applicant’s system as verified by a laboratory approved by the City of Winter Haven.
