GENERAL PURPOSE:

                                      

The City of Winter Park’s Lakes Division is seeking to hire a part-time intern to provide opportunities for college students to gain experience in the field of Biology, Water Resources, or Environmental Science. Interns will participate in water quality and lake management projects, educational and volunteer outreach programs, and assist with other biology related programs.

This paid internship requires a minimum of at least one semester (~4 months).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Individual must be available for all scheduled restoration events and any event preparation necessary. Lake restoration events include the identification and removal of invasive plants, native vegetation planting design, and habitat enhancement. Must be available to work some nights and weekends.

The hours for this position are 8-10 hours per week (flexible based on student’s schedule) with the days of the week being negotiable. 

  • Assists in conducting general lake assessments, native and exotic/nuisance vegetation identification, and habitat assessments.
  • Responsible for monthly collection and quality assurance (QA)/quality control (QC) of water level gauge data city-wide.
  • Investigation of project sites and incidents (such as fish kills, vegetation issues, and water quality concerns).
  • Use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to create related maps and databases for program staff support such as presentations, documents, and housing scientific data for various projects.
  • Assists with water quality and biological sampling.
  • Responsible for cleaning boats and trucks, along with organizing the warehouse.
  • Must be willing to get wet, dirty, muddy, and to work in all weather conditions.
  • Must be able to lift and carry tools, equipment, and materials (over 20 lbs.), for events.
  • Must be comfortable leading and speaking in front of large groups.
  • Must have experience in Microsoft Office software such as Excel, PowerPoint, Word and other various software for program staff support.

Performs other duties as assigned or as may be necessary.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: 

Knowledge of the principles, methods, and practices of sustainable development, traditional town planning, transportation and land use

 

Ability to collect, organize and analyze information, perform research and operate a personal computer. (Microsoft Office-Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)

 

Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

 

This position is performed with general knowledge – the incumbent is generally familiar with information contained in relevant source documents or information in a particular subject field; has ability to use relevant sources to obtain specific or supplemental information.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

 

The candidate must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program in fields such as Environmental Studies, Biology, or other closely related field. Prior work experience with water quality sampling or lake management preferred.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience, which provide the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities and other competencies required for the position may be considered.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Physical

This is light work requiring the exertion of 0 – 20 pounds of force occasionally and 0 – 10 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, and reposition objects.

Ability to traverse about an ADA accessible office setting, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Ability to remain stationary at a keyboard for extended periods of time and continuously operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and printer.

Ability to manipulate objects and demonstrate small, precise movements repetitively.

Environmental

Tasks are regularly performed in an office setting without frequent exposure to adverse environmental conditions.

Sensory

Tasks require the manipulation of objects and demonstration of small, precise movements, the ability to detect and distinguish various features of one’s surroundings, and the ability to effectively communicate and exchange information with others.
