This is a temporary non-civil service non-union position not to exceed 866 work hours in a calendar year.

High school diploma or equivalent plus any combination of education or experience equivalent to two years of public or private recreation program experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES: 

Must possess and maintain a valid Washington State Driver's License. Must possess/obtain a Basic First Aid/CPR certificate within six months of appointment.  May be required to obtain a National Alliance of Youth Sports (NAYS) clinician certification.


Under general supervision, conducts a variety of recreational activities for all ages including youth, adults and seniors. Typical duties include developing recreational program schedules and activities; leading activities; recruiting, training and supervising volunteers and participants; obtaining activity sites; developing work schedules; publicizing and promoting programs and activities and coordinates with community groups to design and develop programs. Exercises independent judgment as required for event execution and conflict resolution. Work is evaluated through direct observation, results achieved and customer satisfaction.
Develops annual schedules of recreational activities for all ages including athletic leagues, clinics, field trips, fitness programs, tournaments, special events, arts and crafts and other sports and recreational activities and programs. Plans or coordinates with instructors to develop activities and programs. Secures locations, equipment and supplies. Leads or attends activities. Assists in activity registration processes.
 
Evaluates activities and makes recommendations for expansion or modification of future activities to respond to community needs and interests. Assists in determining program costs and setting activity fees. Promotes and publicizes programs and activities; designs fliers for community distribution; and prepares public service announcements using computer equipment, produces brochures, program materials, coaching manuals and other materials. Assists in preparing copy for and distribution of Parks and Recreation Program Guide.
 
Coordinates and leads adult, playground, pre-school, before/after school programs and others as needed including special events such as annual community-wide basketball tournaments. Plans activities; selects and purchases equipment and supplies.
 
Ensures customer/participant needs and interests are addressed courteously, politely and professionally. Receives, investigates and responds to customer concerns or complaints within assigned areas. Keeps supervisor informed of activities, problems and potentially controversial matters.
 
Coordinates and supervises Youth Baseball Program and other seasonal recreational programs. Recruits participants and coaches; organizes teams as needed; and establishes schedules. Secures fields or facilities. Determines, obtains, distributes and collects equipment and supplies, including team shirts if applicable. Develops and presents basic training for coaches and/or staff. Certifies coaches as needed. Serves as on-site director during league play or activity leader during other recreational programs. Provides technical support. May resolve disputes as needed.
 
Works with Summer Playground Program. Assists in selecting sites, planning schedules, staff training and activities. Serves as lead worker and support to playground leaders by securing equipment and materials and assisting with conflict resolution. Establishes work schedules, assists with hiring summer temporaries and offers budget input.
 
Attends meetings with a variety of recreation-related organizations to identify activities needs, facilities availability and community interests; serves as liaison to resolve issues and provide relevant activities.

OTHER FUNCTIONS: 
May coordinate mobile playground van activities; schedule van for after-school activities and summer playgrounds; plan and lead a variety of activities suitable for school children; and select and purchase necessary equipment and supplies.
 
May assist with other activities such as summer concerts or special events.
 
Requires regular and reliable attendance.
 
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of: principles, methods and practices of modern public recreation including the instruction and organization of recreation programs and activities and team and individual sports; methods, techniques, materials, equipment and safety precautions required for planning and organizing recreational activities; game rules, officiating and strategies. Ability to: perform, teach, lead and coach various sports, games and recreational activities; learn and operate word processing and desktop publishing software; work independently; organize and present training materials; coordinate various aspects of a recreation program.; establish and maintain effective, courteous, tactful and helpful working relationships with fellow employees, program participants, civic and special interest groups and the public; resolve conflicts fairly and objectively; and communicate effectively orally and in writing and to understand a variety of technical and safety materials.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Work is often performed in an office environment while sitting at a desk or computer terminal for extended periods. Must be able to distinguish color and maintain long-term and short-term memory.  Work involves walking and using hands to handle, feel or operate objects, or controls and reaching with hands and arms and occasional standing and sitting for excessive periods. Occasional bending/stooping/kneeling. Occasional heavy work includes lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.  On rare occasions may be required to lift heavier weight with the assistance of others or mechanical devices. Occasionally ascends/descends stairs, ladders and other inclines while maintaining balance. Constant use of all senses including feeling/talking/hearing/seeing while performing duties and while communicating with co-workers, general public and completing all tasks as assigned. Work requires travel to a variety of locations and operation of numerous vehicles and equipment. May work outside with all weather extremes, be exposed to animals, insects, pollen, dust, dirt, water, rough terrain and other weather conditions. Will be required to wear safety protective gear when necessary. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential job functions.  

UNUSUAL WORKING CONDITIONS: May work evenings, split or rotating shifts or weekends depending on programs and activities and be available to respond to emergencies with minimal notice. May be required to lift up to 50 pounds. May work outside under extreme weather conditions and be exposed to dirt, dust, pollen, stinging and biting insects and animals.

Salary : $3,441 - $4,110
