Cemetery Maintenance Supervisor
This position is responsible for the scheduling, selection, and maintenance of city-owned cemetery plots for citizens. The incumbent collects fees, directs plot openings and closings, oversees upkeep, and manages cemetery groundskeepers.
Supervision Received and Exercised:
The Cemetery Maintenance Supervisor reports directly to the Public Works Director and receives general supervision from the Mayor of the City of Yazoo City.
Examples of Important Responsibilities and Duties:
- Schedule routine observation of cemetery grounds for repairs and clean-up services.
- Review and assist maintenance staff in maintaining cemetery grounds, including opening and closing plots, weeding, mowing, and repairs.
- Collect fees for burials by maintaining accurate accounts receivable records.
- Provide or coordinate staff training, work with employees to correct deficiencies.
- Assign daily tasks to employees to maintain scenic grounds, cemeteries, paths, and roadways according to weather and facility's maintenance schedule.
- Oversee the preparation of gravesites for funerals, including opening and closing graves.
- In suitable seasons, prepare soil, plant seeds, weed, roll lawns, cut grass, or remove leaves.
- Oversight of minor maintenance and cleaning of assigned power equipment.
- Provide excellent customer service to all individuals.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Pertinent federal, state, and city ordinances, rules, and regulations.
- Operations, services, and activities of the City of Yazoo cemetery.
- Tools, equipment, and materials used to maintain and repair the cemetery.
- Hazards and standard safety precautions necessary in working with the City of Yazoo ordinances regarding cemetery procedures.
- Small maintenance tools, including various types of landscaping equipment.
- Turf maintenance feeding and care.
- Shrubbery maintenance and appearance.
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma/GED.
- Three years of responsible experience in maintaining a cemetery or other sacred grounds.
- Valid Driver's License.
- Ability to stand, climb ladders, bend, stoop, and lift up to fifty pounds.
- Manual dexterity to operate power equipment, such as chain saws, power hedge trimmers, and leaf removal equipment.
- Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is acceptable.
