We are looking for someone to join Team Yuma as an Assistant Fire Marshal, working with the Yuma Fire Department. The ideal candidate will be responsible for assisting the Fire Marshal by facilitating and writing modifications to fire codes based on fire loss data and identified needs, conduct various inspections, investigate fires, and researching hazards and compliance with fire prevention ordinances. Under general supervision, assists in managing the daily operations of the fire inspection, plan review, and other activities related to the fire code inspection, fire investigation, and community risk reduction.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training and Experience Guidelines
Associate's degree in Fire Science, Construction Technology, Engineering, or related field; AND five years of experience in fire code enforcement and conducting origin and cause fire investigations as the lead investigator; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Bachelor’s degree in Fire or related field is preferred. International Code Council Fire Marshal/Building Official Certification is preferred.
Knowledge of:
- City policies and procedures.
- Federal, National, State, and City building, fire and life safety laws, statutes, rules, regulations, operating standards, mandates, and guidelines.
- Principles, methods and practices of plan specification review, code enforcement, and building construction.
- Requirements for Fire Protection system design and administration of acceptance test.
- Acceptance test procedures and appropriate codes and standards.
- Process for development and adoption of fire safety legislation and regulation.
- Procedure for modification of applicable codes and standards, the judicial review process, and the established appeals procedure for the jurisdiction.
- Types and sources of publications to include approval and listing guides and technical references, various sources for additional reference materials related to code enforcement, and applicable codes and standards adopted by the jurisdiction and their interrelationship.
- Certification training requirements and methods and techniques for risk reduction, inspection, investigation, life safety, and fire prevention programs.
- City geography, traffic patterns, and the location of all streets, landmarks and buildings.
- Computers and specialized hardware and software for preparing reports and maintaining records.
- Safe work practices, occupational hazards and safety precautions.
Skill in:
- Reading, Interpreting, and applying safety standards, construction plans and specifications, codes and standards, state and Federal rules and regulations, and City policies.
- Examining construction projects for electrical, mechanical, and building code compliance or violation.
- Inspecting, investigating, and providing technical assistance for compliance of building, fire, and life safety codes.
- Enforcing fire and life safety codes, regulations, operational standards, and mandates.
- Evaluating consequences of improper enforcement.
- Composing legally adoptable language, identifying acceptable construction methods and materials related to fire safety, and issuing written reports.
- Evaluating staff skills, prioritizing multiple tasks and projects, communicating requirements, leading, educating, supervising, and delegating tasks and authority to assigned personnel.
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others.
- Recognizing problems, making observations, investigating and resolving conflicts, personnel issues, citizen inquiries, and YFD complaints.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
A valid Arizona State Driver’s License is required. International Code Council (ICC) Fire Inspector I, Fire Inspector II, and Fire Plans Examiner; AND International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI) FIT or CFI or National Association of Fire Investigators (NAFI) CFEI certifications are required. Public information credentials, IAAI FIT or CFI; Building Code; Fire and Life Safety Educator; Fire Instructor; and/or Fire Officer certifications preferred. Additional technical training and certifications may be required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Vision is required to perform essential functions. Work is performed in a standard office environment; and within commercial, residential, and industrial occupancies, at construction sites, and emergency incident sites. Work involves working outside the regular working hours to respond and investigate emergency response incidents. Incumbent is required to perform standby duty and be available for emergency call out on a rotational basis.
Work requires data entry, wearing a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) for extended periods of time, standing, lifting, carrying, and transporting equipment weighing up to 40 pounds, and may involve exposure to extreme weather conditions, extreme heat, unstable buildings and structures, hazardous chemicals and materials emergency disaster situations, body fluids, infectious diseases and air and water borne pathogens.
