Summary : Essential job functions of the Irrigation Specialist / Aquatic Technician are to carry out tasks associated with the programming, operations, maintenance and repair of irrigation systems and decorative fountains throughout City Park. May serve in a variety of locations within the park and may work across Departments within the park. The position will be a direct report to the Horticulture Manager.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities : (Other duties may be assigned)
Programming, operation and monitoring of computerized and manual irrigation control systems throughout City Park.
Repairs irrigation systems, plumbing, and irrigation heads as required.
Perform fault tracing and irrigation controller programming.
Convert manually controlled irrigation systems to automatic controls
Perform preventive and corrective maintenance upon irrigation heads and electric valves
Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on decorative fountain systems throughout the park, including within the New Orleans Botanical Garden.
Maintain a proper inventory of irrigation supplies and materials.

Performs equipment maintenance, such as changing oil, checking fluids, diagnosing tread wear,
May serve as a supervisor leading a team in the absence of a supervisor
Working knowledge of basic electricity and hydraulics related to an irrigation system, including automatic valves and controllers, and working knowledge of various types of pumps and pumping systems.
Some knowledge of aquatic facility operations
Cleaning and maintenance of equipment and tools used throughout the daily course of work.
May be required to assist with mowing, edging, weed eating and blowing of all assigned areas.
Basic understanding of mechanical operation of all equipment and ability to communicate to mechanic and repairs or maintenance needed.
Assisting other team members and departments as necessary
Assist with street cleaning, drain clearing and other non-turf care tasks as needed.
Supports and actively promotes New Orleans City Park’s safety programs.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions
Ability to communicate effectively in one-on-one and group situations.
Spraying of herbicides may be required under supervisor guidance.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
High School graduate or equivalent and a minimum of two years’ experience with irrigation systems; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Active and Unsuspended Driver’s License
Ability to work in various weather conditions including extreme heat.
Previous experience related to irrigation and plumbing
Previous experience operating large heavy equipment.
Obtain a Louisiana Landscape Irrigation Contractor License within the first six (6) months of employment.
Obtain a Certified Pool Operator certification through the Pool and Hot Tub Alliance within the first twelve (12) months of employment.

The employee will frequently be required to complete repeated motions that may include the wrists, hands, or fingers. Fingering, grasping, and feeling objects are required. The ability to safely operate machinery, power tools, and motor vehicles or heavy equipment will occur occasionally. The employee must occasionally lift and / or move up to 50 pounds of force, up to 20 pounds frequently, and / or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
The employee is required to have visual acuity to perform an activity such as : operating machinery where the seeing job is at or within arm’s reach; performs mechanical or skilled trades tasks such as technicians and mechanics, and to operate heavy machinery. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The employee is required to have visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and the thoroughness of the work assigned or to make general observations of facilities or structures.
The ability to speak and hear is required. The employee must be able to exchange ideas by means of the spoken word, in which they must convey detailed instructions to others to constantly exchange information and assess the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned. The employee must have the ability to hear sounds at a normal speaking level with or without correction, including the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make fine discriminations in sound.
