The main mission of the City Rescue Mission of Lansing, since its founding, has remained to teach the Word of God as found in the Christian Bible (Romans 10:13-15), edify and equip the saints to be committed followers of Jesus Christ and His teachings (Ephesians 4:11-13), and present an authentic representation of traditional, Biblical Christianity (Philippians 1:9-11). Job Overview:
This role is vital to the Success of the City Rescue Mission. The Assistant either helps prepare or entirely prepares the dinner for the 150 guests we serve. The Assistant must have an excellent grasp on food safety, multitask well, and be able to maintain a clean and organized workstation under pressure. The Assistant must be friendly and encouraging while maintaining shelter policy and procedure with consistency and firmness. The Assistant must also be able to complete tasks independently and accurately, meeting deadlines every time. The Assistant must be able to enforce food safety rules and City Rescue Mission policies to staff, volunteers, and guests in a consistent and caring manner.
Expected Schedule- 1 Shift, Current need is Weekends Only- The Kitchen Assistant needs to be available from Noon to 5pm. The Assistant may be required to fill additional Food Service shifts that fall before or after standard 1 shift hours, additional shifts would fall between 6am and 10am or 4pm and 9pm. Holidays and Weekends as Scheduled, Rotation.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Prep, Cook, and Complete Meals for 150 guests following the pre-assigned menu/recipes, both independently and with other staff and volunteers
- Adapt recipes to large quantities, ensuring accurate measurements
- Follow ServSafe rules/procedures ensuring food safety for all meals leaving the kitchen
- Maintain a clean and sanitary workspace, cleaning and organizing as you work
- Process donations, organize and sort storage spaces, and complete a myriad of cleaning tasks as needed/assigned
- Be a good steward of donations, adapting planned meals as needed to reduce waste
- Oversee volunteers, ensuring their time is used wisely and to the benefit of the City Rescue Mission
- Attend all meetings and training sessions as scheduled
- Show the love of Christ, be ready to share the gospel, and pray with guests regularly
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma- Required
- ServSafe Certified or able to be Certified within 90 days of Employment- Preferred
- Commercial Cooking or Catering Experience- Preferred
- Proficient use of the Microsoft Suite- Preferred
Skills
- Ability to adapt a recipe to a large scale and follow the recipe accurately
- Ability to keep a clean, sanitized work environment at all times
- Ability to proficiently use a phone system that spans multiple facilities- including answering, transferring, putting calls on hold, etc. Within 15 days of introduction.
- Ability to respectfully interact with guests and volunteers no matter their background, temperament, preferences, or life choices
- Detail oriented, organized, thorough, and possessing the ability to multitask well
- Ability to constantly assess the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of all work assignments

Environment
The Kitchen Assistant will need to be able to consistently work in a noisy and distraction-filled environment. The Assistant’s task will occasionally require them to work in low temperatures, high temperatures, outdoor elements (e.g. rain, wind, snow), and small/enclosed spaces.
Physical Requirements-
The below listed abilities are required to be able to complete the essential duties of the role:
The Kitchen Assistant will need to be able to navigate stairs- quickly and proficiently navigating up to 2 flights of stairs whenever needed. They will constantly need to be able to lift 25lbs in all directions and will occasionally need to lift 50lbs in all directions. They will need to be able to complete 1-2 hours of physically taxing work without a break and stand or walk for 3 hours without sitting down. They will occasionally need to complete 3 hours of physically taxing work without a break.
The Kitchen Assistant will need to be able to constantly complete visual scans of indoor/outdoor areas in varying levels of light. They will need to occasionally complete tasks with repetitive motions that include the wrists, hands and/or fingers. They will need to be able to constantly communicate clearly with others to exchange information.
