Work Location:100% Remote Position Overview Reporting to the Vice President of Foundation Relations, the Director of Foundation Relations will work to secure foundation resources in support of City Year’s critical investment priorities, both in existing operations and emerging areas of work. Annual philanthropic support from foundations is essential to City Year’s ability to sustain and grow our capacity to provide supports to students in systemically underresourced schools across the US, enabling improvement and redesign of schools and driving toward broader policy changes that support educational equity. This position will play a critical role on the City Year Headquarters Development team responsible for raising $23M annually. The Director of Foundation Relations will be a highly skilled communicator, an exceptional writer, and an effective storyteller. This position is ideal for a deadline-driven, detail-oriented, and well-organized development professional who shares City Year’s values around advancing educational equity and supporting students furthest from opportunity. Job Description Responsibilities Proposal Development Manage the proposal development process for foundation donors; serve as lead writer for grant proposals. Prepare foundation materials—including but not limited to proposals, letters of inquiry, grant reports, agreements, emails, presentations, and acknowledgment letters—by drafting original copy, editing, and formatting as needed. Grant Management and Stewardship: Maintain grant compliance and reporting, including outcome measurement and grant budgets—taking responsibility for meeting high standards of effectiveness, timeliness, and completeness. Collaborate with teams across the organization to ensure clear communication of foundation expectations and organizational commitments. Track progress toward organizational and programmatic outcomes and goals. Manage the tracking and monitoring of reporting deadlines, implementation and grant expenditure, working across departments and teams as necessary. Coordinate with the Finance on budget tracking and reporting. Knowledge Management Manage systems and protocols for knowledge management, including tracking systems, donor relations database (Salesforce), document retention/filing systems, etc. Maintain records and data related to the management of Foundation accounts in the organization’s CRM and document management systems. New Business Cultivation and Strategy Support VP of Foundation Relations and broader HQ Development team to implement a multi-year strategy to grow revenue from foundations and secure “big bets” investments in City Year’s ambitious plans for long-term impact. Monitor trends and news in philanthropy and K-12 field to share with leadership and prioritize prospects. Organize and prioritize Foundation pipeline, supporting focus on highest potential prospects. Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree preferred, or previous relevant experience 5 years of fundraising experience with a demonstrated track record of success in generating significant grant revenue from foundations Highly organized and detail-oriented Excellent written and oral communication skills Ability to meet deadlines, plan ahead, and balance multiple competing priorities Ability to work with and relate to diverse groups of individuals in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial team environment Flexibility and willingness to work outside standard established business hours to meet sudden and unpredictable partnership needs City Year/AmeriCorps experience a plus Experience with Salesforce preferred Additional Qualities Needed Excellent Writing Skills: Ability to craft coherent, organized, and compelling proposals and reports. Effective and persuasive storyteller. Ability to distill complicated topics into language that is accessible. Communication: Ability to communicate mission and vision to diverse audiences using creative storytelling to connect to passions and purpose; clearly articulates information and ideas orally and in writing. Executes to Results: takes initiative, produces high quality work, prioritizes appropriately, and accepts accountability; delegates responsibilities and holds others accountable. External Relationship Development: takes initiative in establishing new partnerships and external opportunities; ability to secure new commitments to organization; strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills in one-on-one and large group settings. Project Management, Coordination, Facilitation: Ability to lead, direct, and motivate teammates across the organization responsible for delivering on discreet aspects of grant proposals or reports. Effective Collaborator: Builds authentic relationships with colleagues within the National Development team and across departments. Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with a diverse, largely remote staff. Desire to learn: City Year has a unique service model and organizational culture. Successful applicants will have strong experience and a proven track record of success in the above areas, but must also be willing and eager to continue to learn. Self-motivation and discipline to regularly set and achieve work goals Ability to think critically, objectively, analytically, and strategically Ability to maintain a high level of poise and professionalism Attention to detail and timeliness in responding to requests from prospective donors, partners, and colleagues Salary Range: $80k-$90k Desired Start Date: February/March 2023 Benefits Full time employees will be eligible for all benefits including vacation and sick days and organization holidays.
