Job Summary:
This is a maintenance position with responsibility for driving and keeping the fleet clean, fueled, and appropriately housed. Cleaning of maintenance work areas, bus shelters and grounds required. Maintaining and repairing the buildings and grounds with the use of the necessary tools and equipment in a competent and safe manner. This work occurs year-round, with exposure to heat, cold, dust, rain, exhaust fumes, cleaning agents, fuels, and lubricants. Individuals must be able to operate all equipment and vehicles. Individuals must have some mechanical ability. Some lifting is required, approximately 80 pounds.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Clean the interior and exterior of buses
- Probing of the fare boxes.
- Fueling, fluid checks, lubrication of buses in addition to any other necessary tasks as required by the Maintenance Department.
- Perform basic maintenance and repair to building and grounds, i.e., clean and power wash walls and floors and fixtures, paint interior rooms, sand and grind away surface rust, prime and paint metal surfaces, install anchor systems to various surfaces for mounting objects to walls or to secure items to the ground, assemble / disassemble bus benches and shelters, assemble / disassemble office furniture, and other tasks related to maintaining or repairing the buildings and grounds.
- Moving building, office, and shop equipment as needed.
- Use of various lifts, hand trucks, skid-steer, forklift, man lift, and other equipment as needed.
- Clean assigned areas of facilities, grounds, shelters and equipment as instructed, using brooms, mops, brushes and other cleaning tools, lawn mowing and grass trimming as necessary.
- Snow removal around all buildings and grounds using snow blowers, shovels, and what resources necessary. Keeping snow and ice off all walkways
- Safely operate and minor maintenance on Floor Scrubber - Sweeper or other equipment necessary to perform this job duty.
- Check all tires for flats and proper air pressure, change tires on equipment.
- Bus switch outs, assist with towing.
- Operate GPMTD transit and support vehicles in a safe manner.
- Complete all documentation of work completed in accordance with current GPMTD requirements to assure orderly, accurate recordkeeping.
- Performs all job functions in accordance with GPMTD safety regulations, utilizing all required safety equipment.
- Assist other maintenance personnel as assigned.
- Perform other maintenance related duties as directed.
Education and Experience:
- Must be at least 21 years old.
- Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Be capable of performing work that may require lifting approximately 80 pounds.
- Ability to perform duties including activities that require reaching, climbing, squatting, kneeling, bending, standing, sitting and good flexibility.
- Must demonstrate some mechanical aptitude.
- Must be able to read and understand all written District procedures, training materials, warning labels, and basic written instructions and verbal instructions.
- Have a valid Illinois Driver's License for at least two (2) years and a safe operating record. Ability to obtain and maintain valid CDL license, air brake and passenger endorsements.
- Have physical ability to operate any District owned vehicle.
- Have good attendance record at prior employer or school.
Working Conditions:
- Lifting and carrying items and equipment of approximately 80 pounds, safely and properly.
- Must be able to read and understand written and verbal instructions relating to warning labels, district policies, and supervisor instructions.
- Ability to perform all cleaning, fueling, and equipment operating functions assigned physically and safely to the position.
General Working Hours:
Position requires some flexibility in scheduled working hours. Some overtime may be required.
Travel:
Travel will be required. Must have a valid driver's license.
