Senior Associate, Policy and Advocacy

Citymeals on Wheels provides a continuous lifeline of nourishing meals and connection for homebound older New Yorkers. Since our founding, we have delivered over 70 million meals. Together, we are working to end elder hunger in New York City by 2040.


The Senior Associate, Policy and Advocacy will contribute to the development and implementation of a policy and advocacy agenda at the city, state, and federal levels to end elder hunger in New York City by 2040. This position will be primarily responsible for creating and executing advocacy campaigns focused on Citymeals’ legislative and budget priorities; conducting policy research and analysis; creating policy and advocacy documents and materials; and, coordinating advocacy events and meetings.


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with the policy team to develop and implement policy and advocacy agendas, campaigns, strategies, and calendars.
  • Plan, coordinate, and implement advocacy actions and events including scheduling and preparing for legislative meetings, maintaining targets database, creating communications materials (including social media), and engaging relevant audiences.
  • Conduct research and analyze data related to key issues and campaigns in aging and hunger.
  • Monitor and conduct timely analysis of relevant city, state, and federal policy and budget initiatives.
  • Produce high quality written work to promote Citymeals’ policy positions and priorities to various audiences (e.g., research briefs, testimony, memos of support or opposition, etc.).
  • Develop and maximize strong and effective organizational relationships with coalition partners, aging services providers, key legislators, agency officials, and their staff.

Represent Citymeals at advocacy and coalition events, including legislative meetings, advocacy days, rallies, press events, public hearings, etc.


Qualifications


Bachelor’s degree in relevant area, such as: public policy, social work, public administration, urban planning, law, nonprofit management; or equivalent work experience. A Graduate degree is preferred, however, relevant work experience may stand in lieu of an advanced degree.

At least two years of professional experience in policy research, advocacy, or a related role is required; a background in aging or anti-hunger policy and advocacy is a plus.

Strong writing and communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex issues to a general audience.

Demonstrated skills in project management, with the ability to manage and track multiple priorities, issues areas, targets, and actions.

Firm understanding of city, state, and federal budget and legislative processes.

Strong ability to develop and maintain effective partnerships with internal and external stakeholders; and demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team.

Demonstrated quantitative and qualitative analytical skills, including the use of public survey data such as the American Community Survey and Current Population survey are strongly preferred.

High degree of commitment to the work, sound judgement, and a collaborative spirit.

Adaptive, creative, hard-working, and unafraid of challenges

Knowledge of GIS is a plus.

Ability to work 3 days a week from the Citymeals office in Midtown, Manhattan. Exact schedule may vary based on business needs.


Salary and Benefits

Salary range for this position is $60,000 - $70,000, plus an annual discretionary bonus based on organizational and individual success.
