Summary:
The City of Lawrence Municipal Services & Operations (MSO) Department provides community services in infrastructure and maintenance (facilities & structures, street and stormwater maintenance, pavement management, water treatment and distribution, wastewater collection and treatment), engineering (engineering design and technical support, stormwater, utility and traffic engineering), and services (solid waste, water, wastewater, fleet management, and administrative functions).
This is a position within the Construction Management, Engineering & Development (CMED) Division and works closely with the City’s Engineering and Inspection staff.
This position is a part-time position (average of 20 hours per week with up to 35 hours per week during the summer) that has the potential to continue through December 31, 2025.
Responsibilities:
The position’s responsibilities include various engineering tasks related to the study, operation, and construction of municipal infrastructure. Tasks include data collection/review/analysis, preparation of construction cost estimates, review of project plans/specifications, preliminary engineering review for conformance with standards, preparation of documents and public mailings, and project inspection items.
The intern will be assigned to both office and field work. Office work is to be performed primarily in person with periodic site visits to City facilities and construction projects.
Qualifications:
Current student enrolled in Civil Engineering or related field working towards an Engineering Degree. Applicant should be well-organized, self-motivated, and detail-oriented. Must be at least 18 years of age with a valid driver’s license and capable of operating a City vehicle.

- GIS, CAD, and computer programming
- Stormwater modeling
- Sustainable infrastructure
- Knowledge of computers, spreadsheets and database programs
The successful candidate will be required to pass a background check and post offer City physical and drug screen.
