Job Summary:
The City of Lawrence is seeking compassionate and dependable individuals to serve as Inclement Weather Shelter Support Staff on a temporary, as-needed basis. This position provides overnight support in operating an emergency shelter during significant weather events, offering a safe sleeping space for individuals experiencing homelessness or community members unable to remain in their homes due to extreme conditions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Work alongside a trained City Staff employee to assist with the setup and operation of the overnight shelter.
- Monitor guests throughout the night, enforce shelter rules, and help de-escalate conflicts as needed.
- Provide basic support, including distributing bedding, snacks, and essential supplies.
- Conduct regular walkthroughs to ensure the safety and well-being of guests.
- Assist in maintaining cleanliness and organization of the shelter space.
- Complete required documentation, including incident reports and shift logs.
Qualifications:
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to remain calm and problem-solve in high-pressure situations.
- Experience working with vulnerable populations is preferred but not required.
- Availability to work on short notice, including overnight shifts during inclement weather events.
- Must be able to stay awake and alert throughout the duration of overnight shifts.
- Must be able to stand, walk, and perform light physical tasks as needed.
This is a temporary, overnight, on-call position activated only during severe weather conditions. Shifts will vary based on need, and staff will always be paired with a trained City Staff employee for support.
