Summary of Position:
Under moderate supervision, the Geologist II supports exploration and development by analyzing subsurface geological data to identify and evaluate potential hydrocarbon reservoirs. This entry to mid-level role involves interpreting seismic, well log, and core data, constructing geological models, and contributing to reservoir characterization and field development planning. Geologist II collaborates closely with drilling, reservoir engineering, and land teams to recommend drilling locations, optimize well placement, and support reserve estimates.
Primary Job Responsibilities:
- Understands fundamental mapping skills — including projections, coordinate systems, troubleshooting data issues, and the creation of various geological maps (isopach/isochore, HCPVH, structure) and knows when to apply gridding algorithms versus hand-contouring techniques.
- Has a foundational understanding of reservoir, drilling, completion, and production processes (including well testing), petroleum system elements, geophysical log and mud log interpretation, seismic reflection, gravity, magnetics, geochemistry, and core/cuttings analysis.
- Utilizes the principles of sedimentology and chronostratigraphy to correlate well logs and define accurate formation tops.
- Applies structural geology principles to interpret geological structures and fracture systems.
- Creates geologically correct structure and isopach maps using both gridding and hand-contouring techniques.
- Creates basic geological models utilizing cross-sections, structure and isopach mapping using well log and seismic data sources.
- Assesses reservoir quality variations utilizing well log analysis.
- Integrates production data into data QA/QC and mapping methods.
- Gains experience in geosteering and horizontal well planning.
- Supports the development plan execution & regulatory approval processes by preparing exhibits, technical reports, and geologic testimony ensuring compliance with applicable environmental & safety regulations.

Education & Experience:
- Bachelor of Science in Geology required.
- Master’s degree in Geology, with a specialization in sedimentary geology or petroleum geology preferred.
- Minimum of 2-3 years’ experience in oil and gas exploration and or/development required.
- Proficient in all aspects of Microsoft Office 365 products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) required.
- Proficient in geological software (Petra/Kingdom/Petrel/Decision Space), but Geographix/GVERSE is preferred
Travel & Additional Requirements:
- Work Location: Work is performed at both field and office locations.
- Schedule: Traditional 40-hour workweek or an alternative schedule of 9-hour workdays Monday through Thursday and 4-hour workdays on Friday, as business needs allow and with manager approval.
- Travel required to the Civitas field locations.
