Summary of Position:
The Health and Safety Manager plays a critical role in enabling Civitas to achieve its commitment to responsible operations, ensuring we are producing energy in a way that is safe, efficient, and environmentally sustainable while meeting the world’s energy demands.
The Health and Safety Manager leads teams of Health and Safety professionals that develop, implement, and improve policies, programs, and practices that ensure facilities and activities are safe and environmentally responsible. The Health and Safety Manager works closely with Production, Midstream, Drilling & Completions, Construction, and support teams to identify and mitigate risks, train and coach personnel, and maintain barriers and corrective measures. The Health and Safety Manager works with operational and management teams to foster a culture of proactive safety and environmental stewardship.
The Health and Safety Manager is an integrated and interdisciplinary role, requiring working knowledge in environmental protection and remediation, safety, occupational health, and operational risk management.
As an operations-minded and operations focused role, the Health and Safety Manager spends time in both the office and in the field.
Primary Job Responsibilities:
- Leads by example, demonstrating Health and Safety excellence through their actions.
- Manages teams of safety specialists, establishing expectations, goals, and professional development plans that enable EHS staff to grow and develop.
- Leads teams that develop and maintain Health and Safety programs.
- Leads the behavior-based safety observation program.
- Responds to emerging incidents and emergencies – 24/7
- Ensures all Health and Safety incidents are reported, ranked, investigated, and recorded in the company’s system of record. Also works with operations to develop and implement corrective actions and share lessons learned.
- Conducts trending analysis and works on development of targeted safety programs and policies.
- Leads incident investigations and causal factor analysis on high severity incidents.
- Develops periodic reports on safety performance and initiatives.
- Conducts compliance review activities with Corporate EHSR Group, and periodically assists as a team member in cross-area cross functional audits.
- Conducts training on various EHS programs as needed.
- Provides field health and safety support to operations for high-risk activities such as SIMOPS, hot work, lockout/tagout, and other life critical operational tasks.
- Implements new programs, policies and procedures to employees and contractors in a consistent manner.
- Follows safe operating practices and ensures compliance with the Company’s EHSR requirements.
Knowledge/Skills/Competencies
- In-depth, broad knowledge of industry Health and Safety regulations, standards, and best practices.
- Working knowledge of upstream and midstream oil and gas operations, equipment, and work practices.
- Excellent analytical and data-analysis skills
- Comfort and familiarity with field personnel and oil and gas equipment (production and drilling & completions).
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Proven ability to work constructively with a broad range of personalities and personnel.
- Capacity to lead cross-functional teams.
- Excellent problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
- Proficiency in using software and tools.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Supervise and lead a team Health and Safety professionals (employee & contracted).
- Take the lead in developing, implementing, and managing EHS programs, policies, and procedures that align with O&G industry standards and relevant regulations.
- Coordinate and supervise training programs to educate employees, contractors, and visitors on safety protocols, procedures, and best practices. This includes overseeing the training of new employees and ongoing refresher courses.
- Supervise the department's budget, allocating resources for training, equipment, and safety initiatives.
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Occupational Health, Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field. Industry experience may be considered in lieu of formal education.
- Minimum 10 years experience in the EHS field with a minimum 5 years of oil and gas industry experience required.
- Minimum of 5 years of supervisory or management experience required.
- Documented experience developing and implementing EHS management system processes and procedures
- Experience delivering training and development programs and performing competency assessments.
- Experience facilitating and leading incident investigations.
- Familiarity with commonly used industry software systems such as CauseMapping, Intelex, Stature, Peloton, GIS, along with basic office software system in the Microsoft Suite
- Clean motor vehicle record and ability to operate a company provided vehicle.
Travel & Additional Requirements:
- Work Location: Work is performed at both field and office locations.
- Schedule: Traditional 40-hour workweek or an alternative schedule of 9-hour workdays Monday through Thursday and 4-hour workdays on Friday, as business needs allow and with manager approval.
