Clackamas Community College (CCC) seeks to hire a Learning Support Specialist, which is part-time, hourly, non-benefits eligible position. We are interested in finding the best candidate for the job, and candidates that may be from a less traditional background. PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The Learning Specialist (LSS) provides learning strategies counseling and academic support for a specific content area. The LSS works with the Learning Center Coordinators and content area faculty to support the student tutors and tutor students in-person and, if applicable, online. In particular, the LSS will assess student needs and develop and implement customized learning interventions for individuals and small groups in order to support the retention and academic success of the College's students. The LSS is expected to integrate broad knowledge of adult learning theory with practical application to support students' information literacy, academic literacy, study skills, and content area knowledge and skills.

 

The Learning Specialist in Writing fulfills the purpose above in the content area of writing, to provide professional tutoring and mentoring to CCC students in the following areas: Writing, Grammar & Editing, Rhetorical principles for writing and/or oral communication, Process planning and management of writing assignments, Reading, Vocabulary, Communicating effectively with instructors regarding deadlines and assignments.

 

The Learning Specialist in Math fulfills the purpose above in the content area of math, to provide professional tutoring and mentoring to CCC students in the following areas: math and related subject areas that require math, quantitative literacy, problem solving, growth mindset, study skills, test preparation, homework support, and communicating effectively with instructors regarding deadlines and assignments.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Tutor students in designated subject area(s) (75%)
    1. Assist the Learning Center Coordinators in mentoring student tutors and peer mentors.
    2. Set tutoring goals with students for individual tutoring sessions.
    3. Plan, design, and implement tutoring plan for students with recurring appointments.
    4. Consult with student's instructors, when necessary, to determine areas to be tutored and best practices for assisting individual students.
    5. Refer students, as appropriate, to additional campus services such as the Disability Resource Center, Counseling, Advising, etc.
    6. Consult with College staff and/or faculty, when necessary, to determine disability accommodations and best practices for individual students.
  2. Leaning Center Support (25%)
    1. Ensure that electronic records of students Writing Center sessions are maintained to enable data analysis.
    2. Plan and coordinate classroom visits to promote Writing Center and Learning Center services.
    3. Plan, design, and present educational workshops for students and faculty regarding writing and editing practices.
    4. Attend and participate in scheduled staff meetings.
    5. Work with the Writing Center Coordinator to plan and deliver tutor orientation, training, observations, and ongoing skill development for tutors as directed.
    6. Prepare, edit, and proof educational and informational handouts for students and faculty/staff.

GENERAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, other agencies, and the general public.
  • Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the classification. 
  • Participate in college committees when requested.
  • Maintain proficiency by attending training and meetings, reading materials, and meeting with others in areas of responsibility, which may require travel.
  • Maintain work areas in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Maintain student confidentiality, data integrity, and comply with all related college, state, and federal standards, including the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).  

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Writing LSS Position: Equivalent to Master's Degree in English, Composition/Rhetoric, Writing or related field AND two years' relevant experience, OR any satisfactory combination of education, training, and experience which demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the above duties; college or high school teaching experience in writing or English courses preferred.

  • Math LSS Position: Equivalent to Master's Degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, or related field AND two years' relevant experience, OR any satisfactory combination of education, training, and experience which demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the above duties; college or high school teaching experience in mathematics courses preferred.

  • Interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate, verbally and in writing.

  • Demonstrated ability to work directly with students to improve content-area.

  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the duties as described will be considered.  

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Breadth of tutoring experience at various levels
  • Experience working with at-risk student populations
  • Student-centered teaching and tutoring philosophy
  • Bilingual 
  • Availability to tutor at multiple locations, in particular the Oregon City and Harmony campuses

The physical demands listed below represent those that must be met by an incumbent to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with qualified disabilities to perform the essential functions.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The position requires limited (0-20%) ability to use dexterity and fine motor skills assemble, build or repair machines or other objects. Occasional (21-50% of the time) use of office equipment.

The position requires little (0-5%) physical effort such as lifting, carrying, or movement, etc. Movements required to complete work are not difficult, and only require a usual degree of agility and hand eye coordination.

The work environment is well protected, with virtually no hazards or obstacles (0-5%).  There is very little element of personal risk or hazard. Job conditions are usually stable, with virtually no (0-5%) issues of confinement, temperature change, incident of noise, or interactions of a disagreeable nature, inside/outside work, dirty conditions, exposure to contagious disease, etc.                   

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervision of others is not a typical function assigned to this position. May provide training and orientation to newly assigned personnel, and may assign work to student workers.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Works under the general direction of the Department Chair, with day-to-day oversight provided by the Learning Center Coordinators.
