Clackamas Broadband eXchange (CBX) is looking for a skilled Telecommunications Construction Technician to join us in building the future of high-speed connectivity in Clackamas County. More than just a job, this is an opportunity to be a key player in laying the groundwork for cutting-edge telecommunications infrastructure that serves county departments, public institutions, businesses, and internet service providers.
As a Telecommunications Construction Technician, you will be at the forefront of CBX's growth, installing, maintaining, and repairing aerial and underground fiber optic and copper cable systems. Your day-to-day tasks will include installing and repairing broadband services, telephone lines, special circuits, cable terminals, and protection devices while working on critical infrastructure components such as pedestals, poles, towers, down guys, and vaults. You will splice communications cables, perform underground utility locates, and install and maintain wireless systems. Operating and driving heavy equipment to install aerial or buried cable will be part of your routine, along with testing and diagnosing fiber optic and copper cable issues to ensure seamless connectivity. You will also ensure compliance with national, state, and county regulations and codes while supporting telecommunications, networking, and two-way radio projects.

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
Within the Communications Services Division of Technology Services, duties require frequent to continuous standing, walking, squatting, kneeling, crawling, bending, twisting, balancing, climbing, overhead reaching, repetitive grasping and fine motor control, and accurate color perception. The ability to lift up to 80 pounds, carry 30 pounds, push 50 pounds, and pull 90 pounds. Duties also involve exposure to electrical hazards, confined spaces (vaults/tunnels), loud noises, vibration, exhaust fumes and dust, moving traffic, slippery and/or uneven surfaces, working at heights, and adverse weather conditions.
WORK SCHEDULE
This position is included in the County’s alternate workweek program, working 40 hours during a standard workweek of Monday through Thursday (Fridays off). Specific hours of work will be discussed with the candidate selected for this position at the time an offer of employment is extended. Must be able to perform after-hours emergency response on a call-out basis. This position is designated as on-site/in-person. It is expected that the selected candidate will perform duties at the specified on-site work location.

Required Minimum Qualifications/ Transferrable Skills:*
- At least three (3) years of experience with telecommunication infrastructure installation, construction, repair, and maintenance
- Knowledge of blueprint layouts and symbols
- Ability and skill to work in confined spaces, vaults, tunnels, and at heights
- Ability to operate hand tools
- Ability to work well in team settings and take direction from others
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, in order to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with customers, county personnel, contractors, vendors, and suppliers
- Ability to perform after-hours emergency response on a call-out basis
- ODOT Traffic Control/Flagging Certification
- Underground Utility Line Locator Training & Certification
- Experience performing moderate to intense manual labor
- Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, and safe operation of equipment

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
- Install, maintain, and repair aerial/underground fiber optic and copper cable, broadband services, telephone lines, special circuits, subscriber carrier systems, cable terminals, protection devices, drop wires, pedestals, poles, towers, down guys, and vaults.
- Complete installation and repair-related forms and reports; update computerized inventory records.
- Splice communications cable including fiber and copper; perform underground utility locates; install and maintain point-to-point / multi-point wireless systems
- Field existing and proposed utility installations for NESC design standards, specifications, and violations
- Drive diesel or gasoline-powered equipment to/from/on the job site. Operate equipment to install aerial or buried cables.
- Test and diagnose issues with fiber optic, copper cables, broadband services, telephone lines, special circuits, subscriber carrier systems, cable terminals, protection devices, and wireless systems.
- Interpret underground and aerial telecom facilities, traffic control, and safety plans in records, maps, and real-time field inspections. Review and revise construction cabling plans for compliance with National, State, and County regulations and codes. Use various code books and regulations.
- Support Technology Services crafts with Telecommunications, Networking, Security cameras, building wiring, and two-way radio projects.
