What are the responsibilities and job description for the RN / NIGHT SHIFT SUPERVISOR position at CLARA BARTON HOSPITAL?

PURPOSE:   Provides professional supervisory nursing practice in the care of the patients at Clara Barton Medical Center; is responsible for performing a variety of duties to ensure quality, coordinated and managed care of all patients: participates with the Director of Nursing (DON)  in establishing goals; determines work procedures and expedites work flow; insures compliance with all operating policies and procedures; communicates with and supervises appropriate personnel; provides progress reports in a timely manner.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

  • Assumes responsibility for providing direct patient care as indicated.
  • Supervises nursing personnel in providing patient care and expedites workflow.
  • Is responsible for nurse/patient assignments while considering the patient census and patient activity.
  • Ensures that all nursing personnel adhere to the standard job requirements.
  • Responsible to ensure each first time Temporary Staff personnel receive an Orientation Packet, and help with the Orientation checklist to ensure compliance of safety, CBMC nursing policies and information needed for the Temporary Staffing personnel.
  • Responsible for having and maintaining current BLS (Basic Life Service); ACLS, PALS Recommended.
  • Makes rounds on all patients a minimum of two times per shift.
  • Carries the master key ring.
  • Works in conjunction with the DON to determine the optimal allocation of staff per shift.
  • Coordinates the care of patients and communicates patient/family/employee concerns to the DON.
  • While working on the shift, serves as administrative authority for the smooth function of the nursing unit.  Notifies the DON of urgent concerns during the shift.  When the concern is non-urgent, notifies the DON by phone message or e-mail.
  • Assists Nursing personnel in completing risk assessments, incident report forms and investigations of injury.
  • Assists in survey compliance, quality assurance and staff development duties, as assigned.  Notifies the DON of identified nursing personnel learning needs.
  • Ensures equipment is cleaned and stored appropriately.
  • Is trained and competent with the facility Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system.
  • Provides input to the DON to complete evaluations for employees on the shift. 
  • Assists with annual budget preparation by identifying supply and equipment needs.
  • Assists nursing personnel in assessing patients who are experiencing acute changes.
  • Provides clinical expertise in the management of medical emergencies.
  • Oversees supplies dispensed from the Materials Management Department after hours.
  • Directs staff response to emergencies, such as severe weather, fire or bomb threat.  Directs disaster evacuation according to the CBMC Disaster Plan, as needed.
  • Meets monthly with the Director of Nursing (DON) and other Shift Supervisors.
  • Assists with the development and implementation of nursing policies and procedures.
  • Maintains prompt and regular attendance.
  • Is a “go to” person on the assigned shift; solve problems, addresses issues, and works with physicians to meet the needs of patients and their families.
  • Performs related work, as assigned.

  • Supports and cooperates with established CBMC policies and procedures for:
  • Safety, including universal precautions and safe work practices, established fire/safety/disaster plans, risk management and security plans.

 

      • Confidentiality of all data, including patient, employee, and operations information.
      • Quality Assurance and compliance with all regulatory requirements.
      • Compliance with current law and policy to provide a work environment free from sexual harassment and all illegal and discriminatory behavior.

 

  • Supports and participates in common teamwork:
    • Cooperates and works together with all co-workers; plans and completes job duties with minimal supervisory direction.
    • Uses tactful, appropriate communication in sensitive and emotional situations.
    • Promotes positive public relations with patients, family members and guests.
    • Completes requirements for in-service training.
    • Complies with the attendance policy and dress code.
