BASIC FUNCTION :

The Associate Director is charged with building employer relationships, developing programming and coaching students in Integrated Sciences. Integrated Sciences is a new academic program rooted in CMC’s foundational liberal arts and leadership mission, and unique in its approach to organizing science education around global societal and scientific challenges. The program consists of three areas of focus : (i) human health (genomics, systems biology, and health); (ii) the brain (brain, learning, and decision); and (iii) the planet (climate, energy, and the environment).

Core elements of the new Associate Director role include developing and maintaining relationships with external and on-campus constituencies, particularly employers, alumni and parents excited to work with our talented students, developing internship and full-time recruitment pipelines, and closely partnering with faculty and academic advisement in the Kravis Department of Integrated Sciences. This role reports to the Director of Student Opportunities at the Soll Center for Student Opportunity.

Charged with seeing the campus through the eyes of the student, the Soll Center for Student Opportunity assists students in exploring, cultivating and translating their skills, interests and talents into real-world opportunities. Partnering with the multiple constituencies that advise, mentor and guide our students, including faculty, staff, alumni and parents, the Center aims to empower students to formulate individual goals and strategies for achieving them through the use of resources, thoughtful exploration and early engagement in personal and professional development.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

  • Develop, enhance and manage recruiting relationships with full-time and internship employers (including alumni, parents, trustees, and professional recruiters) in those fields that will best employ the skills and competencies of the program. These include biotech companies, environmental consulting firms, national laboratories, federal agencies, NGOs, and many others. Partner with faculty to create multiple pipelines of research and internship opportunities (50%).
  • Conceptualize, implement, conduct, and evaluate recruitment programs and events, including networking treks, panel discussions, and health related meet-ups for students and alumni in key areas related to their personal and professional development (30%).
  • In partnership with the pre-health Advisor, coach all science students in small groups and one-on-one, supporting them in their exploration, personal and professional development, and helping them focus on pre- and post-graduation plans and activities that will enhance career-related knowledge, skills and abilities (20%).

  • QUALIFICATION STANDARDS & SKILLS :

    EDUCATION : Bachelor’s degree required.

    EXPERIENCE : Five or more years of proven work experience with increasing responsibility in recruiting, career services, and / or external relations. Experience in the sciences is highly desirable.

    LICENSES : A valid driver’s license or equivalent means of reliable transportation to off-site meetings and events is required.

    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES : Individual must possess knowledge, skills, and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodations, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

    The position requires :

  • A passion and excitement for issues related to human health, the brain, and / or the planet.
  • Professional skills in career coaching methods and employer relations that are effective at a highly selective, liberal arts institution that can be used to meet the needs of a diverse and highly motivated student population.
  • Excellent oral and written skills. Effective, accurate and clear communication with excellent verbal, written, interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Customer service orientation, respecting the abilities and accomplishments of elite liberal arts students, while retaining the ability to guide where necessary.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups and constituents including students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, graduate schools and employers.
  • Computer proficiency with basic Microsoft Office software (such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and Powerpoint) and career development software (such as Handshake). Demonstrate understanding of the use of technology / devices / equipment in assessing and improving career services systems and processes to achieve annual goals and maintain confidentiality.
  • Prioritize and perform multiple projects / tasks, meet deadlines / timelines, respond to others in a timely manner, and work both independently and as a collaborative member of the College with a high standard of integrity and ethics, in support of the College’s strategic vision and the department’s annual goals.
  • Use exceptional organizational and time management skills to complete work with accuracy and a keen attention to detail.
  • Some working knowledge with the natural sciences and their applications is highly desirable.
  • OTHER :

    REQUIRED HOURS : The regular hours for this full time position are 8 : 00 a.m. to 5 : 00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Holiday, weekend and evening work hours will be required. Travel will be required. Regular hours may vary due to needs of the College or department. This is a 12-month position.

    CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS :

    This is an exempt, full-time, benefits-eligible position.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS : Sedentary (up to 10 lbs.)

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY : May supervise student employees.

    SALARY RANGE : The anticipated salary range is $80,000 - $85,000 per year. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

    GROOMING AND APPEARANCE : The Claremont Colleges seek to maintain a neat and professional image at all times. A uniform is required for certain events and will be provided.

    BACKGROUND CHECK : The successful candidate will be required to undergo a full consumer background check. Certain positions will require the successful completion of a post-offer physical agility test. Employment is contingent on the satisfactory results of the aforementioned, in addition to compliance with requirements cited in this job description.

    Salary : $80,000 - $85,000
