As an Educational Sign Language Interpreter, you will play a vital role in ensuring effective communication between students who are deaf or hard of hearing and their peers, teachers, and other members of the educational team. You will provide interpretation services in classroom settings, school events, and other educational environments to support student success and access to learning opportunities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide accurate and confidential interpretation between spoken language and American Sign Language (ASL) for students who are deaf or hard of hearing in educational settings, including classroom instruction, discussions, and presentations.
- Facilitate communication between students, teachers, and other school staff to ensure access to curriculum content, instructional materials, and classroom discussions.
- Collaborate with teachers and other educational professionals to support the implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and accommodate the unique needs of students with hearing impairments.
- Assist students with understanding and following classroom routines, instructions, and assignments, providing clarification and support as needed.
- Advocate for the inclusion and participation of students who are deaf or hard of hearing in school activities, events, and extracurricular programs.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions and adhere to ethical standards of practice for sign language interpreters.
- Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance your skills and knowledge as a sign language interpreter and stay current on best practices in the field.
Requirements:
- EIPA score of 3.5 or higher, willing to accept other certifications (i.e., RID certification, state licensure)
- Bachelor's degree in Sign Language Interpreting, Deaf Education, or a related field preferred
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and fluency in English
- Knowledge of educational terminology and practices, particularly in K-12 settings
- Experience working as a sign language interpreter in educational settings preferred
