Primary responsibilities include leading the Tax Function, including US and Canadian Federal, State and Local income taxes; sales/use/GST/PST/QST taxes; property taxes and eco fees. Identify and lead tax planning opportunities to ensure full compliance with all laws and regulations, while achieving an efficient effective tax rate. Supervise and manage a team of tax professionals. Coordinate with tax leaders, external tax advisors and legal counsel as appropriate. Oversee Financial Statement accounting for Income Taxes. Ensure full compliance with all applicable reporting requirements. Manage tax audits.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Identify and Lead Tax Planning Opportunities:
- Review of Legal Entity and Organizational structures
- Utilization of NOL Carryforwards
- Intercompany transfer pricing and markups
- Business Development Opportunities (acquisitions, joint ventures, etc.)
- Assess impact of new sales and marketing programs; IT, manufacturing and other initiatives
- Identify and assess impact of potential tax law changes and assess impact/risk to the organization.
- Supervise, manage and lead a team of tax professionals. Review organizational structure for maximum productivity and efficiency. Review current outsourced relationships related to US tax planning issues and preparation of Canadian tax returns.
- Ensure proper accounting for income taxes in the financial statements. Oversee financial reporting disclosures and variance explanations for tax related balances.
- Coordinate on issues related to parent company royalties, common audit issues, tax reporting systems, and tax planning opportunities. Work with KPMG, E&Y, legal counsel and other external tax advisors on tax related issues, as appropriate.
- Ensure full compliance for all reporting requirements related to tax return preparation and submission.
- Coordinate and manage all information requests and tax related audits.
- Develop an annual tax cost center budget and monitor monthly spending as needed.
- Provide guidance and assistance to the ERP implementation as needed to ensure tax requirements are included within the initial design, test plan, training plan, etc.
- Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops or classes; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks, participating in professional societies.
- Lead and/or participate in special projects as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting. CPA, Masters in Taxation, and/or Tax Law degree preferred.
- Knowledge and experience in US and Canadian income, sales and use, and other taxes.
- 10 or more years of Accounting experience, strong technical US GAAP accounting knowledge, Big-4 Managerial Experience.
- Must be highly analytical and inquisitive with strong organizational abilities, keen attention to detail, and ability to meet monthly deadlines and goals.
- Excellent organizational, managerial, interpersonal and communication (written and oral) skills, ability to work in a team-based, continuous improvement environment, ability to deal with ambiguity.
- Business Acumen, results oriented, highly motivated individual.
- Ability to lead and manage a group of tax professionals.
- Strong computer skills including Word, Outlook, Excel.
