The Design Engineer will be responsible to perform engineering functions as required to design and/or redesign products in accordance with quality, production, and customer standards.
Essential Duties:
Gather data concerning the product and its design. Data is obtained from such sources as customer comments/complaints, existing designs, warranty reports, performance and endurance testing, etc. Understand and interpret data to identify criteria for new and/or medication designs.
Coordinate efforts with various departments and groups, both internal and external, to the company.
Such groups may include:
Marketing – to gain customer input, develop cost and pricing estimates.
Manufacturing – to implement changes, improve production efficiency and quality.
Vendors – to order parts, insure quality supplies.
Customers – to improve customer satisfaction, gain input about customer needs.
Quality Assurance – to insure product quality and that trucks meet specification.
Other Engineers – for assistance with design solutions, insure design fit.
Designers (Sr.) – to develop design layouts and detail drawings.
Test Division – to oversee test procedures and results.
Create and develop new and/or revised product designs.
Produce designs as CAD system output, layouts, detail drawings, SI drawings and/or others as required.
Perform basic and complex calculations in mechanical, electrical or hydraulic engineering.
Determine and analyze various design attributes. Such attributes may include strength, loads, forces, stress, tolerances, fluid pressure and flow rates, etc.
Guide and assist others, including Design Engineers, Designers and others.
Field and answer questions about products and product designs.
Communicate designs and changes to others by making recommendations, proposals and presentations.
Oversee and coordinate building, ordering, installation, and testing of prototype parts. Work closely with the test lab to ensure that tests are conducted as needed and/or conduct testing themselves.
Check and verify the completeness and accuracy of all work performed by the incumbent and the work of others.
Maintain a high level of technical competence, including a knowledge of the product, customer needs, and competitor products.
Understand and apply the standards set forth in UL, NFPA, ANSI, ISO, EN, ITA and others in all work.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:
Participate in Quality Improvement Teams. Involves team approach to improving such things as manufacturing processes, efficiency, product quality, cost, and customer relations. Make presentations and reports about team findings.
Travel to other facilities or places to participate in meetings, examine truck operation, etc.
Investigate problems in product designs. May require on-site observation of truck operation, disassembly and inspection of parts, analysis of truck parts and components.
Assemble prototypes of trucks and/or truck components.
Sharing information and answering questions concerning planning, design, alterations, production, etc.
Use of basic office equipment such as copier, telephone, etc.
Participate as a team member in work, meetings and other functions such as transferring information to others, improving working relationships with co-workers, developing the competencies of subordinates, contributing to team success.
Show effective concern for the quality of all output and the needs, concerns and priorities of all “customers,” both internal and external, to the company.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Four (4) year Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical or Bio Systems with Machine Design focus) or Physical Sciences
Prior experience in product engineering or related field
Basic mechanical understanding of fork truck design and operation.
Experience using a design drafting package, preferably NX and Teamcenter.
Experience using a MRP system, preferably BaaN.
Must be able to travel abroad including North America and Internationally.
Must be able to work in the U.S. indefinitely
Strong computer skills including PowerPoint and Excel
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
Proven, strong project management and organizational skills necessary
Strong attention to detail and ability to follow through on multiple projects and tasks at one time
Must be authorized to work in the US indefinitely
ENVIRONMENTAL / PHYSICAL CONDITIONS:
The incumbent is located in an office environment with regulated heating and cooling. Some work is performed using a computer and monitor, as well as basic office equipment. The incumbent may be exposed to any of a wide range of conditions if required to travel outside the office. This would include visiting a manufacturing location, the engineering test lab, a customer site, etc.
