Professional Tutors are part-time employees who report to the Learning Services Coordinator to help Clark State students increase their knowledge and performance in course subject areas; specifically introductory level English, Math, and Anatomy & Physiology courses. Clark State is a trauma-responsive institution that aims to bridge gaps in access to skills, resources, and technologies for our learners. Applicants should be passionate about working with multiple students simultaneously who possess different levels of need, ability, and experience. Professional Tutors are required to learn how to differentiate and embrace the differences between teaching and tutoring by using evidence-based practices determined by the Learning Services Coordinator.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Maintains visibility in the Student Academic Support Center in Springfield (Leffel Lane) and/or the Greene Center in Beavercreek to support students in need.
- Supports at least one subject area—Anatomy & Physiology, Math, and/or Writing—during consistent drop-in tutoring hours each week.
- Balances supporting multiple students during drop-in tutoring requesting help in different courses.
- Participates in embedded tutoring in English, Pre-Algebra, or Anatomy and Physiology by working with students in a specific course section, attending a minimum of one class per week followed by two hours of drop-in tutoring to students in their assigned sections.
- Connects course content to real-world relevance by tying concepts and theories from the classroom to the student’s current and future life and work experiences.
- Assists in programming related to developing basic computer literacy skills for students needing to learn how to use Windows computers, the internet, and Microsoft Word.
- Records notes for all Tutoring sessions to track utilization and progress, as well as reporting concerns directly to the Learning Services Coordinator.
- Engages in ongoing professional development provided by the Learning Services Coordinator.
- Associates degree required, Bachelor’s degree in areas requiring advanced writing, math, and biology proficiency preferred.
- Able to host drop-in at either the Springfield (Leffel Lane) or Beavercreek locations.
- Experience providing one-on-one or group tutoring or instructional support required.
- Ability to work a minimum of three hour shifts multiple times a week.
- Ability to tutor in person in English, algebra, statistics, and biology. Click here for course syllabi >>
- Ability to lead workshops on technical literacy skills for individual or groups of students.
- Able to commute to both Springfield (Leffel Lane) and Beavercreek locations.
- Ability to work shifts between the hours of Monday through Friday from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
- $18.00/hr. for Associate's Degree
- $20.00/hr. for Bachelor's Degree
- $22.00/hr. for Master's or Doctorate Degree
