Description

Clarke provides children who are deaf or hard of hearing with the listening, learning and spoken language skills they need to succeed. Annually, nearly 1,000 children and their families benefit from programs and services at our five locations: Boston, Jacksonville, New York City, Northampton, Philadelphia.


We have several opportunities for Teachers of the Deaf in our New York City location.


CLASSROOM RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Planning, preparing and executing lessons based on child’s needs, IEP goals, CASLLS, ELCC, curriculum and developmentally appropriate practices etc.
  • Maintaining all required documentation for attendance, parental communication, IEP observance, health and safety, etc.
  • Supervising children throughout the day
  • Supervise recording, transcribing and analyzing language samples
  • Facilitate children’s interaction with a curriculum that reflects the basic principles of child development
  • Maximize opportunities for listening and spoken language development in the classroom
  • Facilitate children’s communication in the classroom and ensure carryover of activities between the classroom and individual speech-language sessions
  • Engage individual and small groups of children, in activities which contribute to the development of auditory and spoken language skills
  • Provide a comfortable and supportive environment that welcomes parents and caregivers into the school community
  • Direct/supervise teacher assistant
  • Perform any other tasks as assigned by the director to support the functioning of the school

MEETINGS AND PLANNING:

  • Participate in meetings with educational team to discuss children’s progress
  • Participate in staff meetings, weekly
  • Participate in parent meetings as needed
  • Participate in CASSLS conferences
  • Participate in parent workshops or Clarke community events

WRITTEN PLANS AND REPORTS:

  • Create written plans that are designed to meet the needs of the children in the class and that reflect NYS Learning Standards and IEP goals
  • Communicate with parents through various modes such as communication notebooks and school blog
  • Prepare progress reports and IEP proposals
  • Daily assessment of progress
  • Promote Clarke’s Mission and Goals

Requirements

  • NYS certification in Deaf/HH Education/Master’s degree
  • NYS certification in a related area- Early Childhood Education, TSSLD, Early Childhood Special Education, etc. preferred
  • Experience and commitment to the listening and spoken language approach to education of deaf and hard of hearing children required
  • LSL Cert AVT or AVEd certification or willingness to pursue
  • Excellent written /spoken English communication
