Job Summary
Groundskeepers are responsible for assisting with the overall maintenance, appearance, and functionality of the golf course and surrounding grounds. Groundskeepers typically perform a variety of tasks throughout the day including operating different types of walking lawn mowers, use of string trimmers, operation of powered debris blowers, use of chainsaw, and operation of other motorized equipment, raking bunkers, mowing greens, changing hole locations, hand watering, filling ball washers, filling water coolers, moving tee markers, etc. In addition, Groundskeepers are often called upon to assist with special projects, irrigation repair, fertilizer and chemical applications, and other general maintenance tasks.
Essential Functions
- Safely and efficiently operate mowers and other light equipment. Regularly checks fluid levels before operating machines and reports any abnormalities to supervisor.
- Routinely services the golf course by changing green flags and putting cups, moving rope and barricades, and moving tee markers.
- Installs sod and plants bushes, shrubs, and other native plants according to specified instructions.
- Performs routine grounds maintenance including: edging, raking, and maintaining sand bunkers; weed eating around trees, bunkers, and cart path curbs; mowing tees and approaches; blowing leaves and debris with back pack blowers.
- Applies divot mix to driving range tee and other tees on the golf course.
- Empties outdoor trash cans as assigned.
- Assists in the construction and seeding of new greens, tees and fairways.
- Exercises skill in following safety practices and recognizing occupational hazards. Regularly performs duties in a safe and efficient manner.
Work Environment
This job operates in an outdoor recreational environment including working outside in the heat or cold. This role routinely uses equipment and machinery such as mowers, blowers, string trimmers, chain saws, edgers, and hand tools.

Experience/Qualifications
- A valid Maryland state driver’s license
- Experience working with hand tools, power tools, and outdoor equipment
- General knowledge of, or interest in, golf course operations
- Must be available for weekend, holiday, and shift and early morning work
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
Seasonal part-time position during the golf season. The usual season is the middle of March through October. (Students who are unable to work the entire season are welcome to apply.) This role is expected to work early mornings, days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Based on weather conditions, staffing, and the busyness of the particular golf course this role could work from 15 – 40 or more hours per week during the season.
